BUIES
CREEK, N.C. Campbell
University has added a pair of men's golf recruits, head coach John
Crooks announced on Friday.
Cristobal Beltramin Sanchez of Santiago, Chile and Zak Drescher
from Landisville, Pa., will join the Fighting Camel program in the
fall of 2007.
Beltramin Sanchez is the
latest product of South America to join the Fighting Camel
program. He was the
number-one ranked junior in his native Chile during 2005, when he
also won the Chilean match play championship and finished in the
top-five of the Chilean
Open.
He won the Chilean match play
doubles title in 2006 and is a two-time participant in the Callaway
World junior championship.
Beltramin Sanchez finished third in the 2003 South American junior
championship and posted top-13 showings in the event both in 2005
and 2006. He also helped
Chile to a third-place finish in the 2005 South American team match
play
championship.
"Cristobal is one of the
finest players in South America," said Crooks, who is in his 17th
year as head coach of the Campbell program. "He has represented Chile numerous
times in international competition. He participated in the World Junior in
San Diego and demonstrated the type of attitude and determination
necessary to be successful."
Drescher joins the Camels
from Hempfield High School after finishing seventh in the
Pennsylvania state championship as a junior and sixth last fall
during his senior season.
He was runner up in the 2006 Pennsylvania District III championship
last October. His senior
season stroke average was 72.1.
In addition, he won the
Lancaster Junior Championship last summer. Drescher also placed fifth in the 2005
Pennsylvania junior championship. He has also participated in a number
of AJGA events along the eastern
seaboard.
"Zak is an extremely talented
athlete and he has a tremendous work ethic," said Coach
Crooks. "He has prepared
himself for college golf by playing in numerous national junior
events. We are very
fortunate that Zak chose Campbell over several other schools, and
look forward to having him on our
team."
During the 2006-07 season,
Campbell tied a school Division I era record with four team
tournament wins (Hartford, Old Dominion, Campbell, William &
Mary). The Camels finished
third in the Atlantic Sun Championship behind East Tennessee State
and North Florida. Junior
Fredric Sundberg received an individual berth in next week's NCAA
East Regional at Alpharetta, Ga.
In 17 years as head coach at
Campbell, Crooks has been named league coach of the year 14 times
for either the men's or women's teams. He was inducted into the National Golf
Coaches Association Hall of Fame in January
2006.
