MACON, Ga.Campbell's Alicia
Valtin was named Atlantic Sun Female Track & Field Athlete of
the Week for the second time this year after placing fourth in the
steeplechase at the prestigious Penn Relays last
Thursday.
Valtin, a senior from
Sanford, N.C., broke her own school record by over nine seconds as
she finished the steeplechase with a time of 10:24.72. Her time is
currently 18th best in the nation and 10th best in the East Region.
Along with breaking a school record and moving up in the national
standings in the event, Valtin's time extended her lead over the
rest of the Atlantic Sun to over 78
seconds.
The time was her third NCAA
regional qualifying mark of the season in the steeplechase. She has
also qualified for the NCAA East Regional in Gainesville, Fla. on
May 25-26 in the 1500 meter race.
The award is the second for
Valtin this outdoor season and her fourth overall. She was also
honored during the 2006 indoor season and earned her first AOTW
honor for track and field during the 2005 outdoor season. Along
with her four track and field AOTW awards, Valtin has also been
tabbed the A-Sun's Athlete of the Week five times over the past two
season's in cross country. In all, Valtin has been honored as an
A-Sun AOTW nine times.
Valtin and the Camels travel
to Lynchburg, Va. tomorrow night for the Liberty Twilight Qualifier
in their final preparation for the Atlantic Sun Championships on
May 11-12 in Johnson City, Tenn.
