BUIES
CREEK, N.C.Campbell head volleyball coach Malinda Ashcraft
announced the signing of six student-athletes to play for the
Fighting Camels beginning this fall. Caitlin Bendy, Taylor Deering,
Elisabeth Ennis, Caroline Hammersley, Emily Werner and Brandy
Worlton makeup the 2007 Campbell freshmen class.
"We
are really excited about this incoming group of freshmen," Ashcraft
said. "We have a solid group of returning players from last season
and all six of these young ladies will come in a complement what we
have in place and build on the success we had last season."
Bendy,
a 6-foot-0 middle blocker, was named Long Island Player of the Year
after totaling 304 kills, a .626 attack percentage, 62 solo blocks
and 59 service aces. The Stony Brook, N.Y. native led Ward Melville
High School to the New York Final Four and a 23-1 record. During
her four-year career with the Patriots, her team amassed an 82-1
record winning a pair of New York State Championships.
She
is a two-time First-Team All-State, All-County and All-League
honoree and was named to the Class AA All-Tournament Team this past
season.
"Caitlin
comes from a very sound volleyball background," Ashcraft said. "She
is a confident competitor and we are looking to her to add strength
to our offense in the middle position. I think she will compete
early for a place on the court."
Deering,
a 5-foot-9 outside hitter, joins the Fighting Camels after an
outstanding prep career at Jack C. Hayes High School. The Austin,
Texas native is a three-time First Team All-District performer and
was named to the 4A All-State Team last season.
"Taylor
will bring so many good things into our team this fall," Ashcraft
said. "She brings maturity beyond her years as a controlled and
polished athlete. She will make an immediate impact for us this
fall."
Ennis
set Village Christian Academy career records in kills (739), blocks
(110) and digs (441) during her four year career with the Knights.
A 5-foot-9 outside hitter from Fayetteville, N.C., Ennis help guide
Village Christian to a 16-4 record last season with her team-best
239 kills, 168 digs and 44 blocks.
Last
season she was a National Christian Schools Athletic Association
All-American finalist. Ennis is a three-time North Carolina
Independent Schools Athletic Association All-State Team member and
was named Carolina Christian Conference Player of the Year two
times.
"Elizabeth was quite a find for our program," Ashcraft said. "She
is a tremendous athlete and I was very impressed with her
competitive tenacity. She will be one to watch as she develops with
our program."
Hammersley,
a 5-foot-10 outside hitter from Raleigh, N.C., prepped at Cardinal
Gibbons High School where the Crusaders have won eight of the last
nine North Carolina Class 2A State Championships. Last season
Hammersley totaled 194 kills, 55 aces, 40 blocks, 97 digs and a
.312 attack percentage playing in 29 matches.
She
ranks fifth all-time in Cardinal Gibbons history in aces (167),
12th in kills (418), 13th in digs (307) and
17th in blocks (102). During her four-year career, the
Crusaders went a combined 117-13 winning three state championships.
Hammersley was a 2006 All-Conference selection and a 2005
All-Conference Honorable Mention selection.
"Caroline
will come into our program training for the setting role," Ashcraft
said. "We saw great potential for her and I believe she has the
athletic ability and the mental demeanor to manage the
responsibility of running our offensive game."
Werner
joins the Camels from Riverview High School in Sarasota, Fla. where
she was a two-time First Team All-State performer for the Rams. The
5-foot-9 outside hitter helped guide Riverview to the district
championship the past three years and a combined record of 107-15
during her four-year stint.
Last
season she had 404 kills, 53 blocks, 173 digs, 56 aces and a .420
attack percentage. For her career, Werner totaled 1,269 kills, 176
blocks, 709 digs, 261 aces and a .420 attack percentage.
"The
first thing I noticed about Emily is her intense posture on the
court," Ashcraft said. "There is no doubting her will to win. I
think her energy and enthusiasm will make us a stronger team."
Worlton,
another Florida product, prepped at Crystal River High School in
Crystal River, Fla. The 6-foot-3 middle blocker was named Citrus
Chronicle Player of the Year following both her junior and senior
seasons. She led the Pirates in kills, blocks and attack percentage
her sophomore, junior and senior years earning her All-Area and
All-Conference honors.
During
her four-year career, she accumulated 718 kills, 264 blocks, 133
aces and a .519 attack percentage leading Crystal River to three
conference championships and a pair of district championships.
"I am
eager to have Brandy join us this fall," Ashcraft said. "I think
that she has a passion to compete and improve her capacity as she
steps up into the collegiate game. It will be great fun to see
where she land in our line up."
Last
season the Camels accumulated their most wins since 2001 and the
most victories under head coach Malinda Ashcraft finishing the
season at 13-17. Three players received Atlantic Sun All-Conference
honors and NCCSIA All-State honors.
