BUIES CREEK, N.C.—Campbell head volleyball coach Malinda Ashcraft announced the signing of six student-athletes to play for the Fighting Camels beginning this fall. Caitlin Bendy, Taylor Deering, Elisabeth Ennis, Caroline Hammersley, Emily Werner and Brandy Worlton makeup the 2007 Campbell freshmen class.

"We are really excited about this incoming group of freshmen," Ashcraft said. "We have a solid group of returning players from last season and all six of these young ladies will come in a complement what we have in place and build on the success we had last season."

Bendy, a 6-foot-0 middle blocker, was named Long Island Player of the Year after totaling 304 kills, a .626 attack percentage, 62 solo blocks and 59 service aces. The Stony Brook, N.Y. native led Ward Melville High School to the New York Final Four and a 23-1 record. During her four-year career with the Patriots, her team amassed an 82-1 record winning a pair of New York State Championships.

She is a two-time First-Team All-State, All-County and All-League honoree and was named to the Class AA All-Tournament Team this past season.

"Caitlin comes from a very sound volleyball background," Ashcraft said. "She is a confident competitor and we are looking to her to add strength to our offense in the middle position. I think she will compete early for a place on the court."

Deering, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter, joins the Fighting Camels after an outstanding prep career at Jack C. Hayes High School. The Austin, Texas native is a three-time First Team All-District performer and was named to the 4A All-State Team last season.

"Taylor will bring so many good things into our team this fall," Ashcraft said. "She brings maturity beyond her years as a controlled and polished athlete. She will make an immediate impact for us this fall."

Ennis set Village Christian Academy career records in kills (739), blocks (110) and digs (441) during her four year career with the Knights. A 5-foot-9 outside hitter from Fayetteville, N.C., Ennis help guide Village Christian to a 16-4 record last season with her team-best 239 kills, 168 digs and 44 blocks.

Last season she was a National Christian Schools Athletic Association All-American finalist. Ennis is a three-time North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association All-State Team member and was named Carolina Christian Conference Player of the Year two times.

"Elizabeth was quite a find for our program," Ashcraft said. "She is a tremendous athlete and I was very impressed with her competitive tenacity. She will be one to watch as she develops with our program."

Hammersley, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter from Raleigh, N.C., prepped at Cardinal Gibbons High School where the Crusaders have won eight of the last nine North Carolina Class 2A State Championships. Last season Hammersley totaled 194 kills, 55 aces, 40 blocks, 97 digs and a .312 attack percentage playing in 29 matches.

She ranks fifth all-time in Cardinal Gibbons history in aces (167), 12th in kills (418), 13th in digs (307) and 17th in blocks (102). During her four-year career, the Crusaders went a combined 117-13 winning three state championships. Hammersley was a 2006 All-Conference selection and a 2005 All-Conference Honorable Mention selection.

"Caroline will come into our program training for the setting role," Ashcraft said. "We saw great potential for her and I believe she has the athletic ability and the mental demeanor to manage the responsibility of running our offensive game."

Werner joins the Camels from Riverview High School in Sarasota, Fla. where she was a two-time First Team All-State performer for the Rams. The 5-foot-9 outside hitter helped guide Riverview to the district championship the past three years and a combined record of 107-15 during her four-year stint.

Last season she had 404 kills, 53 blocks, 173 digs, 56 aces and a .420 attack percentage. For her career, Werner totaled 1,269 kills, 176 blocks, 709 digs, 261 aces and a .420 attack percentage.

"The first thing I noticed about Emily is her intense posture on the court," Ashcraft said. "There is no doubting her will to win. I think her energy and enthusiasm will make us a stronger team."

Worlton, another Florida product, prepped at Crystal River High School in Crystal River, Fla. The 6-foot-3 middle blocker was named Citrus Chronicle Player of the Year following both her junior and senior seasons. She led the Pirates in kills, blocks and attack percentage her sophomore, junior and senior years earning her All-Area and All-Conference honors.

"I am eager to have Brandy join us this fall," Ashcraft said. "I think that she has a passion to compete and improve her capacity as she steps up into the collegiate game. It will be great fun to see where she land in our line up."

Last season the Camels accumulated their most wins since 2001 and the most victories under head coach Malinda Ashcraft finishing the season at 13-17. Three players received Atlantic Sun All-Conference honors and NCCSIA All-State honors.
