BUIES
CREEK,
N.C. As many teams play their final games of the spring
season, the focus turns to summer wood-bat leagues, as will be the
case for several members of the Campbell baseball team. Brandon
Scott, Ryan Hamme, Justin
Lilly, Rob Lyerly and Carlton
Floyd all will don the uniforms of Coastal Plain League teams
while Robb Meng and John
Watlington will play in the Southern and Carolina Virginia
Collegiate Baseball Leagues respectively this summer.
Scott led the Camels in RBI
this season with 32 and climbed to fourth on the career stolen base
list with 45 in three seasons. Scott returns to the Wilson Tobs for
his second season in the CPL. He was named the team's most valuable
player last summer as he led the '06 squad with a .305 average and
18 stolen bases in 53 games. His efforts earned him a mid-season
all-star selection to the league's National Division
team.
Hamme will also be spending
his second summer in the CPL, playing for his hometown Wilmington
Sharks. This spring, Hamme tied for the CU lead in home runs with
four and was second on the team in stolen bases with 10. On the
mound, Hamme recorded three wins in relief, including a victory
over second ranked North Carolina.. Last summer with the Sharks,
Hamme batted .204 and drove in nine runs in 24 games. On the hill,
Hamme won a game and tied for the team lead in saves with
two.
Lilly joins the Outer Banks
Daredevils after his first season with the Camels. Lilly started 11
games for the Camels and tied for second on the team in appearances
with 20. Lilly also was second in innings pitched with 80.0 and in
strikeouts with 54. He earned an honorable mention for A-Sun player
of the week on April 2 when he went 7.0 innings against ETSU,
allowing just two earned runs while striking out five.
Asheboro will be the destination for
Lyerly, as the freshman will be a Copperhead for the summer. Lyerly
was one of three freshmen on the CU roster to register at least 75
at-bats and made 27 starts at third, short, second and at
designated hitter. He was the only freshman to homer; belting his
first career shot at Mercer on March 16, had five multi-hit games
and drove in nine runs on the season.
Floyd will join Scott in
Wilson on a two-week contract. Floyd was the catalyst at the top of
the Campbell lineup as he led the team in hits (78), doubles (13),
extra-base hits (17) and total bases (101) in starting every game
for the Camels. His 14-game hit streak towards the end of the
season and 22 multi-hit games were also good for tops on the
team.
Meng is one of two Camels not
in the CPL, as he will suit up for the Carolina Sox of the Southern
Collegiate Baseball League in Fort Mill, S.C. Meng tied Hamme for
the team lead in home runs with four and was a fixture at shortstop
for most of the season. The junior's season was highlighted by a
2-5, five RBI day against Seton Hall on March 3, as he hit the
first of two Campbell grand slams on the season.
Watlington rounds out the
host of Camels in summer ball as he will suit up for the Danville
Cougars of the Carolina Virginia Collegiate League. Watlington
transferred in at semester from UNC Asheville and started 11 games
for the Camels. The sophomore finished the '07 season on a tear,
hitting safely in seven of his last eight games in batting .357
(10-28) over that span.
