Alicia Valtin Finishes Sixth in Steeplechase at NCAA East Regional; Waits for At-Large Bid to NCAA Championships

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Campbell senior Alicia Valtin finished sixth in the 3000 meter steeplechase at the NCAA East Regional Saturday at the University of Florida.

Valtin missed an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships by one spot, but posted the best non-qualifying mark in all four regionals and will wait until Tuesday to see if she receives an at-large spot in the national meet.

The Sanford, N.C. native crushed her own school record by over 10 seconds crossing the line in a time of 10:14.63; her old school record mark was 10:24.72, which she set at the Penn Relays on April 26.

Duke's Liz Wort won with a time of 9:52.34 beating out Barbara Parker from Florida State by almost a minute.

Valtin entered the meet ranked 12th in the region.

Valtin's teammate Sam Tilly earned a spot in the NCAA Championships Friday night becoming Campbell's first-ever regional champion winning the long jump.

The NCAA Championships are June 6-9 in Sacramento, Calif. on the campus of Sacramento State University.
