BUIES CREEK, N.C. Campbell
University junior Fredric Sundberg is one of 423 players nationwide
selected to participate in the 2007 NCAA Division I men's golf
championships. Sundberg was
one of six individuals tabbed to play next Thursday-Saturday (May
17-19) at the NCAA East Regional at the Golf Club of Georgia in
Alpharetta, Ga.
Sundberg will
be joined by a trio of Atlantic Sun Conference players at the
Alpharetta regional.
Jacksonville teammates Duncan Stewart and Russel Knox and North
Florida's Jeff Dennis also earned at-large individual berths. A-Sun champion East Tennessee
State claimed the league's automatic bid and is the fifth-seeded
team at the West Regional in Stillwater, Okla.
The NCAA
Championship will be conducted May 30-June 2 at the Gold Course at
Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Virginia. Virginia
Commonwealth University is the host institution for this year's
championships.
Three regional
tournaments, encompassing the current nine sub-regions, will be
conducted May 17-19. A total of 27 teams and six individuals not on
selected teams were assigned to each regional site. Ten teams and
two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each
regional to the championship finals.
Sundberg is the
third men's golfer in Campbell's NCAA Division I era (since
1977-78) to gain an at-large entry to the NCAA regional round. Georges Plumet earned individual
spots in the 1998 and 1999 regionals, while Simon Dunn was an
individual participant in 2002.
"I'm just so
proud of the year Fredric's had and the contribution he's made to
the University as a student and athlete," said 17th-year Campbell
head coach John Crooks.
"This is further proof of the direction our program is
headed."
A junior from Gothenburg,
Sweden, Sundberg stands fourth in the A-Sun and 72nd nationally
with a 71.71 stroke average. In
addition to first-team all-conference recognition, he earned
all-tournament honors at the Atlantic Sun Championship with a
fifth-place finish. He
produced seven top-10 individual showings in 11 tournaments. Sundberg won the William &
Mary Invitational at Kingsmill for his third career individual
victory. He also added
runner-up finishes at the Bowling Green and Charleston Southern
tournaments.
The 2005 A-Sun Freshman of
the Year, Sundberg gained second-team all-conference recognition in
2006. He has played in each
of CU's 31 tournaments over his first three seasons.
During the 2006-07 season,
Campbell tied a school Division I era record with four team
tournament wins (Hartford, Old Dominion, Campbell, William &
Mary). The Camels finished
third in the Atlantic Sun Championship behind East Tennessee State
and North Florida.
