BUIES
CREEK, N.C.
For the fourth-straight year, coach John Crooks will lead Campbell
University's women's golf team into post-season play on Thursday
when the Lady Camels compete in the NCAA West Regional.
Hosted by
Brigham Young University, the West Regional championship will be
held Thursday-Saturday at Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club in
St. George, Utah. The
par-71, 6234-yard Johnny Miller Signature layout is surrounded by
red rock sandstone cliffs and ancient lava fields and features
narrow fairways.
Campbell
will be paired
with Nebraska and Washington State for the first two rounds of the
54-hole event. CU will
start from the 10th tee at 12:30 p.m. (Mountain Daylight Time) on
Thursday, and from the 1st tee at 8:00 a.m. on Friday. Saturday's final round tee times and
pairings will be determined by 36-hole scores. Live scoring will be available on-line
at www.golfstat.com.
The string of
four-straight post-season berths is the second-longest in the
18-year history of Lady Camel golf. CU advanced to six-straight NCAA
regional events from 1997-2002.
This week,
Campbell senior Alejandra
Shaw will become just the second Campbell golfer to play in
four-straight regional championships after competing in the 2004
East Regional at Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla., the 2005 East Regional
at Gainesville, Fla., and the 2006 East Regional at Browns Summit,
N.C.
The two-time
Atlantic Sun Conference player of the year and league tournament
champion, Shaw will join Laura Torrisi (1998-2001) as the only
players in school history to compete in four career regional
events.
After
securing the Atlantic Sun Conference automatic berth with a victory
last month in the league championship at home on Keith Hills
Country Club No. 1, Campbell will make its 10th regional appearance
in the last 11 years this week. CU has advanced to regional play
either in team or individual competition 13 times in the last 15
years.
Campbell's
victory in the Shoot-out at the Legends last October kept a
remarkable string of success in order. Since Coach John Crooks took over the
program in 1991-92, Campbell has won at least one tournament every
year (56 total) in 16 seasons. CU won a school-record eight
tournaments in 1997-98 and six events in both 1996-97 and
1998-99.
CU enters the
NCAA West Regional with five tournament titles in 2006-07 -- the
Shootout at the Legends (Oct. 9-10), Richmond Spider Fall
Invitational (Oct. 16-17), Edwin Watts Palmetto Intercollegiate
(Oct. 30-31), Fighting Camel Spring Classic (Feb. 26-27) and the
A-Sun Championship (Apr. 9-11).
The victory in
the league championship marked Campbell's A-Sun record eighth
conference title since joining the loop in 1994-95. In fact, Campbell has finished either
first or second 12 times in its 13 years as an Atlantic Sun member,
winning the championship three times in the past four
seasons.
Now in
his 16th year in charge of the Lady Camels, Crooks has led his team
to 56 tournament victories, second only to Dan Brooks of Duke (100)
among active Division I women's coaches. Crooks' total ranks seventh on the
all-time NCAA Division I women's golf coaching wins
list.
The Fighting Camels are
ranked 37th in the nation in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin
Performance Index. Campbell
is ranked number 23 nationally in the latest Golfstat scoring
charts with a team stroke average of 301.76 per round. In Golfstat's NCAA head-to-head
rating, CU stands 46th in the nation.
Shaw
(Vina del Mar, Chile) won the 2007 A-Sun individual title in a
school and conference 54-hole record four-under-par 212. Junior Maite Ortiz de Pinedo
(Valladolid, Spain) tied for second, freshman Belen Diaz Cisneros
(Buenos Aires, Argentina) finished fifth and frosh Mary Mattson
(Ijamsville, Md.) tied for ninth.
