BUIES
CREEK,
N.C. Eric Flinchum, a four-time NAIA All-American, has been
named assistant wrestling coach at Campbell University, head coach
Billy Greene announced Wednesday.
Flinchum, who won the 2007
NAIA national championship in the 285-pound weight class at the
University of the Cumberlands (Ky.), will pursue his MBA while
assisting with the NCAA Division I Fighting Camel program that
competes as an associate member of the Colonial Athletic
Association.
"With his athletic background
and high level of achievement, Eric is going to make a huge
contribution with our upper weights," said Coach Greene. "In a lot of ways, Eric is a
great fit for us. He
understands that you should strive for highest achievement in the
classroom and on the mat."
During his undergraduate
career, Flinchum compiled a 117-13 won-lost record. He finished fifth in his weight class
as a freshman at the NAIA championships, and posted back-to-back
runner-up showings before claiming the national title in
2007.
A four-time NAIA East Region
champ, Flinchum helped Cumberlands to a third-place team finish in
the 2006 national championships and a fifth-place showing during
his senior year.
"I'm very excited to now be a
part of the wrestling program at Campbell," said Flinchum, a
resident of Crestview, Fla.
"One of the things that drew me to Campbell was how much potential
this team has to grow over the next few years. I'm confident that
I can contribute a lot to this team and I'm ready to get to
work."
While at Crestview (Fla.)
High School, Flinchum won the 2002 Florida state championship at
the 189-pound weight class.
He also placed fifth at the state meet during his junior year and
compiled a two-year record of 55-3. Flinchum also wrestled two years at
Manassas (Va.) Osbourn Park High School, where he produced a 33-11
record.
During his collegiate career,
Flinchum also assisted with the University of the Cumberlands
summer wrestling camp, where he organized and led practices in
addition to administrative duties.
