PINEHURST, N.C. Campbell
University rising senior Maite Ortiz de Pinedo won her first and
second round contests in the match play segment of the 105th North
& South Women's Amateur Championship at Pinehurst No.
2.
A native of Valladolid,
Spain, Ortiz was seeded 60th in the 64-player field following
qualifying rounds of 73-82155 at Pinehurst No.2 and No.
8. Three other Campbell
players participated in the qualifying rounds but failed to advance
to match play.
Graduated senior Alejandra
Shaw tied for 91st (77-81158) with Campbell rising sophomore
Mary Mattson (79-79158). Rising senior Emily Simpson tied for
112th in the 154-player field at
83-78161.
On Wednesday, Ortiz de Pinedo
defeated fifth-seeded Alison Whitaker from Victoria, Australia,
four-and-three in the first round of match play. She then defeated 28th-seed Alex
Schulte of Broken Arrow, Okla., five-and-three in Thursday's 8:18
a.m. second-round contest.
Ortiz de Pinedo and Ann Laney
will meet in Thursday afternoon's third-round match. Match play continues with
quarterfinals on Friday, semifinals on Saturday and final on Sunday
at Pinehurst No.
2.
Six rounds of match play will
determine the North & South Women's Amateur champion. The
defending champion (Jenny Suh) is exempt from qualifying and
assumes the 1st seed in match play. The remaining 63 match play
seeds were determined by the 36-hole
qualifier.
During the spring 2007
season, Ortiz de Pinedo became one of 16 individuals in the history
of the league to earn Atlantic Sun all-conference women's golf
honors three times in her career. She gained second-team honors both in
2005 and 2006 before earning first-team recognition this past
season..
Ortiz de Pinedo ranked third
among A-Sun players and 169th nationally in scoring average
(76.0). She tied for
runner-up honors (74-76-76226) at the A-Sun Championship to
earn all-tournament recognition and produced seven top-20 showings
in 12 events. Ortiz de
Pinedo won the Fighting Camel Spring Classic and was named A-Sun
women's golfer of the month in February.
