BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- The
Campbell women's tennis team will add one newcomer to the 2007-08
squad, head coach David Johnson recently announced. Cristina Garcia
Brunet, of Barcelona, Spain, heads to Campbell as a sophomore
transfer from the University of Barcelona.
"Cristina should likely
compete for a higher line-up position in singles and doubles," said
Johnson. "Being a transfer, she brings added maturity and
experience to an already established team."
Brunet has experience playing
against many world-ranked players. She carries wins over Nastassya
Burnett (WTA ranking 1459) and Ferrer (WTA ranking 1200). Brunet
has also been the hitting partner of Laura Pous (WTA ranking 101)
and Nuria Roig (WTA ranking 290).
At the age of 11, Brunet was
accepted into the Pro-AB Tennis Academy, which was recently named
the best tennis institution in Spain, and has practiced there
since. She won several
national tournaments as a junior in Spain.
The Lady Camels finished the
2006-07 season with an 18-5 record, including a 6-4 mark in
Atlantic Sun play.
Three players received
All-Conference honors: Scarlet Alfonzo (First Team), Ana Surviladze
(All-Freshman) and Blanca Saenz (All-Freshman).
