DURHAM, N.C.-Campbell University volleyball begins its opening
tournament of the 2007 season with a 3-1 mark in the North Carolina
Central Invitational in Durham, N.C.
"I'm very pleased with the way we played," said CU Head Coach
Malinda Ashcraft. "It's early in the season and I'm extremely happy
with these wins, but we know we have a long way to go. We put out
some great efforts against some really good teams. We have a
tremendously young team and if they continue to improve and give us
efforts like they did this weekend, we're going to be alright."
In
the finale of the weekend, CU topped host North Carolina Central in
straight sets, 30-22, 30-17 and 30-27. With the win, the Camels are
out to their best start since the 2001 team started 4-0.
Emily Werner sparked the Camels again in match number four of the
invite, recording her second double-double (13 kills, 10 digs). A
native of Sarasota, Fla., the freshman totaled 46 kills in her
first collegiate tourney, 13, 12, eight and 13 respectfully.
Taylor Deering, also a freshman, registered 16 kills in the match,
while collecting nine digs. Sophomore libero Melissa Harvey added
13 digs for the contest.
The Eagles move to 3-2 on the year, breaking even in the tournament
at 2-2. Shari Matthews gathered 16 kills and nine digs to lead the
N.C. Central offense, while Rachael Lloyd notched 14 total
digs.
The Fighting Camels will play their fist match of the 2007 season
in Carter Gym on Aug. 28, as they will take on Winston-Salem State
at 7:00 p.m.
Game Three:
Campbell, 3; Norfolk State, 0
DURHAM, N.C.-The Fighting Camels took three straight games from the
Spartans of Norfolk State in volleyball action, Saturday, Aug. 25,
at the North Carolina Central Invitational.
For the Camels, junior middle blocker Femi Alabi recorded a
match-high 12 kills, one block solo and four block assists, while
freshman outside hitter Emily Werner added eight kills. Freshman
outside hitter Caitlin Bendy contributed three block solos and six
kills. With the win, Campbell improves its mark on the year to
2-1.
Meanwhile, Norfolk State falls to 0-4, still searching for its
first win of the year. Melissa Faircloth added eight kills for her
team, with Yolanda Roberts notching three kills and eight digs.
Errors proved to be the deal breaker for NSU, as the Spartans
compiled 27 on the match, surpassing its 23 kills.
Each team totaled eight kills in game one, but errors by the
Spartans benefited the Fighting Camels, as CU took the win, 30-19.
Game two saw a similar fate, as the Spartans, again, recorded eight
kills, while Campbell notched 12 for the win, 30-21. The Camels,
looking to take game three, and the match, again capitalized on NSU
errors, taking the game, 30-27 in the contest.
Campbell will take the floor once more today, this time against
host N.C. Central at 7:00 p.m.
Wolfpack Downs Camels In Volleyball Action

DURHAM, N.C.-Despite winning the first game, 30-25, Campbell
University volleyball falls to North Carolina State, 3-1, in North
Carolina Central Tournament play.
Freshman standout Taylor Deering led the way for the Fighting Camel
offense, recording 17 kills and digging seven. Sophomore Melissa
Harvey notched 19 digs and added two aces on the match. Emily
Werner, a freshman outside hitter, totaled 12 kills in the contest.
Campbell falls to a 1-1 mark on the season with the loss.
N.C. State sent out a balanced attack, having six players with five
or more kills and four with at least six digs. Despite not have a
single player in double figure kills or digs, the Wolfpack
strengthens its record to 2-1.
In
game one action, Campbell knotted the Wolfpack at 22 all, before
managing an 8-3 run for the win. With a hot 21-29, .655 hitting
percentage, State had no answer, falling 30-25.
Game two was owned by N.C. State, as the Pack gained the first
point of game, never looking back. The Camels cut the lead to 10-9,
however, N.C. State's 20-9 run sealed the win. In a stiff game
three, the Camels, again, got in front early, jumping out to a 10-5
advantage, before surrendering the lead in the tight bout as N.C.
State finished with the advantage, 30-27.
17-30 in game four. Offensive struggles hindered both teams in the
fourth set, combining for a .035 hitting percentage in the game.
However, State's 7-0 run finished off the Camels in the finale.
The Fighting Camels are slated to take the floor again this
afternoon with a 3 p.m. matchup with Norfolk State, followed by a 7
p.m. meeting with tourney host, N.C. Central.
