Match Two: Charleston Southern, 3; Campbell,
1
CHARLESTON, S.C.-After winning four of five to begin the 2007
season, Campbell volleyball will leave the Charleston Southern
Invitational without a win, going 0-4 over the weekend.
The Fighting Camels took on tourney host, Charleston Southern
today, Sept. 1, but the Buccaneers would leave the floor with a 3-1
advantage.
With the loss, CU drops under the .500 mark for the first time this
season at 4-5, while the Bucs move to 2-2 on the year.
Freshman outside hitter Taylor Deering recorded another 16 kills
and five digs while Atlantic Sun preseason team selection Femi
Alabi collected 14 kills in the loss for the Camels. Alabi's 14
kills were a product of 27 attacks, as the junior middle blocker
made only two errors for an average of .444. Emily Werner, another
freshman outside hitter, recorded nine kills of her own in the
match, also grabbing five digs.
Errors were, again, a problem for the offense, totaling 29 on
attacks and 19 off serves. Deering and Werner combined for 18 of
the team's attack errors, as the pair hit .159 and .000 in that
order.
CSU's Amanda Hill troubled the Fighting Camels on both sides of
play, notching 16 kills on 24 attempts (.542 percentage),
committing only three errors, and 11 digs in a double-double
performance.
Campbell started hot, taking the first game, 30-28, however, the
Bucs would edge the Camels in game two, 30-27 in another tight set.
Game three proved to be another close set, as Charleston Southern
took another, 30-22, in a game where CU committed ten attack errors
and the Bucs pounded 17 kills.
CSU shut the door in game four, though, hitting .400 (14 kills, 4
errors, 25 attempts) while the Camel offense struggled at .054 (12
kills, 10 errors, 37 attempts).
Up
next for the Camels is a home match, as the East Carolina Pirates
will come to the Creek in a Sept. 4 contest, slated for a 7 p.m.
start inside Carter Gym.
Match One: Stetson, 3; Campbell, 0
Stetson Downs Fighting Camels, 3-0
CHARLESTON, S.C.-Campbell volleyball drops its first contest to an
Atlantic Sun opponent, as Stetson gets the win at the Charleston
Southern Invitational on Saturday.
With the win, Stetson collects its third win of the season,
improving to 3-3 overall. Meanwhile, Campbell, on a three match
skid, falls to 4-4 in 2007.
Freshman outside hitter Emily Werner tallied a game high 15 kills
and totaled ten digs for another double-double, while junior middle
blocker Femi Alabi recorded her second-straight double-digit game,
with ten kills. The only other Camel in double figures included
sophomore libero Melissa Harvey with 14 digs in the midday
match.
Hitting .282 in the match, Stetson connected early and often,
out-knocking the Camels, who averaged .150 on 42 of 113 attack
attempts. In the first game, the CU offense put up only 12 points,
as they lost the first set. Stetson would go on to take three
straight from the Fighting Camels, dropping the second game, 30-28,
and the third, 30-24.
Stetson's Rebecca Orzechowicz led her squad with 11 kills, while
Beth Slabaugh and Gina Iacona both recorded ten. Melanie Boyer also
grabbed ten digs.
The Fighting Camels will take the floor one last time in Charleston
at 3 p.m., taking on host Charleston Southern.
