BUIES CREEK, N.C.- The Campbell University women's soccer team will
kick off its regular season home opener against the Virginia
Military Institute, Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Eakes
Athletic Complex. The
non-conference matchup marks the first ever meeting between
Campbell and VMI.
The Fighting Camels look to turn the tide as they suffered a pair
of weekend losses first to the Wolfpack of NC State, 3-0, followed
by a 2-1 overtime loss to Elon at the High Point University
Invitational.
Junior midfielder Amanda Murphy scored Campbell's first goal of the
2007 regular season in the 24th minute of play on
Saturday against Elon.
Murphy, a Putnam Valley, N.Y. native, headed a Caity Brown cross
into the upper left corner of the goal to tie the game at 1-1. The assist marks Brown's first
of the season.
The Virginia Military Institute (3-1-0) enters the contest having
compiled its best start in school history. The Keydets, who have outscored
opponents 14-5, earned victories over Howard, The Citadel and South
Carolina State.
Although Campbell and VMI have never met, the Keydets carry a 0-2-0
record against A-Sun opponents. Their last A-Sun matchup came in 2004,
as Gardner-Webb downed VMI 8-1.
Senior Alexa Bernas and freshman A.J. Baker share the team's lead
in goals compiling four apiece, while keepers Heidi Beemer and
Angela Redmond own a .792 save percentage.
The Fighting Camels will continue play as they entertain
Presbyterian in a 7:00 p.m. kick off at the Eakes Athletic Complex,
Wednesday, Sept. 19.
Next up for the Keydets will be a road match against the Richmond
Spiders, Sunday, Sept. 16.
