CREEK,
N.C. Campbell University opens its 2007-08 men's golf season
this weekend at the New Mexico William H.
Tucker Invitational.
The
54-hole tournament begins with 36 holes on Friday with a 7:30 a.m.
(MDT) shot-gun start at the University of New Mexico Championship
Course in Albuquerque. The
final 18 holes start Saturday at 7:30 a.m. Live scoring will be
available on-line at www.golfstat.com.
The 7,350-yard,
par 72 layout has been nationally recognized by Golf Digest
Magazine as one of the top-25 public courses in the country, and by
Golfweek Magazine as the No. 1 course to play in New Mexico. The University of New Mexico
Championship Course was the site of the 1976, 1992 and 1998 NCAA
Division I Men's Golf Championships as well as 1991, 1995 and 2002
NCAA West Regional, Nationwide Tour events and the New Mexico State
Open. In 1987 the course was the site of the Women's NCAA
Championship and will again host the ladies championships in
2008.
Coach John Crooks' Fighting
Camels, who won four tournament titles a year ago, will be led by
2007 Atlantic Sun first-team all-conference performer Fredric
Sundberg. The senior from Gothenburg, Sweden posted a 72.1 stroke
average last season and finished among the top 10 individuals seven
times in 12 events, including a victory at the William & Mary
Invitational. He finished
fifth at the A-Sun Championship and received an at-large berth in
the '07 NCAA East Regional.
Sophomores Gregg Hostetter
and Daniel Ng Choo Sian will also make the trip. Hostetter compiled a 74.2 stroke
average during his freshman campaign and had five top-20 individual
finishes. Ng Choo Sian
averaged 77.6 strokes over 12 rounds in 2006-07 and produced a pair
of top-20 finishes.
A pair of freshmen -- Matt
Moot of Johnstown, Pa., and Cristobal Beltramin from Santiago,
Chile will make their collegiate debuts for the Camels this
weekend.
