BUIES
CREEK,
N.C. --
For nearly 55 years, Campbell Basketball has called Carter
Gymnasium its home. As the
Fighting Camel men's and women's basketball teams enter their final
season of competition in Carter Gym, the Campbell University
Department of Athletics has planned a series of reunions to
commemorate the teams that have played in the facility.
Following the completion of
the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center and Gilbert Craig Gore
Arena in the fall of 2008, Carter Gym will continue to serve the
students of Campbell University as a site for recreation,
intramurals and physical education classes.
During the 2007-08 Campbell
men's and women's basketball seasons, the Fighting Camels will
honor four distinct eras of competition at Carter Gym with pre-game
receptions and on-floor half-time recognition.
On Saturday, November 24, two
reunions will be held prior to the 1:00 p.m. men's basketball game
vs. Radford. Campbell
University will recognize those men and women who played basketball
at Carter Gym during the junior college era (pre-1961). In addition, the University will also
honor those who played for Angier and Boone Trail High School at
Carter Gym in the Feb. 29, 1964 county championship game
which still stands as the longest basketball game played ever, 13
overtimes.
There will be a pre-game
reception for the junior college era Campbell coaches and
participants as well as the Angier-Boone Trail participants and
their guests at 11:00 a.m. in the lobby of the new Campbell
Pharmacy Building, which is located beside Carter Gymnasium. Participants will also be
recognized on the Carter Gym floor during half-time of the game
that afternoon.
On Saturday, Dec. 15,
Campbell's NAIA-era teams (1961-77) will be recognized. Activities begin with a 3:30 p.m.
reception at the Pharmacy Building, followed by the women's game
vs. Iona at 5:30 p.m. and the men's game vs. Liberty.
The NCAA Division I / Big
South Conference era (1977-94) teams will be recognized on
Saturday, Jan. 5 beginning with a pre-game reception at 11:00
a.m. Campbell then faces
Belmont in women's action at 1:00 p.m., followed by the men's game
at 4:00 p.m. The reception
area will also be open between games from 3:00-3:45 p.m.
TAAC/Atlantic Sun era
(1994-present) basketball teams will be honored during the men's
and women's doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 26. The reception area will again be open
from 11:00 a.m.-12:45 p.m. and from 3:00-3:45 p.m. The women take on Stetson at 1:00
p.m.; then the Camel men face the Hatters at 4:00 p.m.
All former players and
coaches must RSPV to the Campbell athletics department
(910-893-1329) no fewer than 10 days prior to the reunion to
reserve a game ticket. Participants and one guest will be
provided with a complimentary game ticket on the date of the
reunion. Additional game
tickets may be purchased at the gate for $8.00 each and may be
reserved in advance.
