BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.-Campbell volleyball rallied late, but
Gardner-Webb grabbed the 4-1 decision in
Boiling Springs, N.C.
With the loss, Campbell falls to 6-12 on the year, 0-3 in
conference play, while Gardner-Webb moves to 9-10 and 1-2 in
2007.
With much improved offensive numbers, the Fighting Camels rode on
the strength of an overall hitting percentage at .278. The last
time the squad attacked the net better that that was over a month
ago, when the Camels hit an efficient .400 vs. Winston-Salem State
(Aug. 28, 2007).
Several Fighting Camels recorded season and career highs during the
contest, as freshman Emily Werner notched a .412 hitting percentage
and Elizabeth Ennis, another freshman, tallied 39 assists in the
loss. Junior Femi Alabi also knocked a season-high 15 kills while
sophomore Melissa Harvey amassed five aces in the match. Ashley
Weers, also a sophomore, racked up double-digit kills for the first
time this season, with ten in the match.
In
addition to her 15 kills, Alabi, a middle blocker, hit a stellar
.357 while assisting on four blocks. Harvey, serving as the Camels'
libero, grabbed 19 digs on the day, while freshman Caroline
Hammersley notched 13 of her own.
The Runnin' Bulldogs saw four players with double-figure kills,
with Bethany Martin (11), Jessica Clayton (18), Heidi Steinebrunner
(19) and Ashley Pridgeon (14) reaching that mark. Regina Feagin,
however, fed the Gardner-Webb offense, tallying 60 assists during
the four game contest.
Taking the first game of the match, 30-20, Gardner-Webb was fueled
by Steinebrunner, Clayton and Feagin, who notched seven kills, five
kills and 17 assists respectively. Alabi also hit well for her
squad, connecting with five of seven attempts in the first set.
Game two proved to be a much closer set, with six ties and four
lead changes, but, the Runnin' Bulldogs again took the game, 30-26.
Feagin powered the offense with 18 assists in the set, while
Clayton managed eight kills on nine attempts in the game, good for
an average of .889.
The Fighting Camels rallied in game three, however, as Werner led
the way, pounding six of seven attempts through the Runnin' Bulldog
defense, hitting .857. Down 7-1 in the frame, the Fighting Camels
reeled off a 9-3 run to tie the set at ten points a piece. Campbell
did not grab the lead until late in the set, though. Knotted at
22-all, a Harvey service ace put the Camels up for the first time,
and for good, as CU took the game, 30-25.
Game four had a reverse script of its predecessor, as the Fighting
Camels took the lead well into the game, yet turned it over. Again,
both teams held at 22, but, this time, Gardner-Webb took control,
taking the game and the match, 30-26.
The Fighting Camels will now return home for a pair of contests
next weekend, with Jacksonville and North Florida coming into the
Creek. Campbell will square off with Jacksonville on Friday, Oct.
5, for the Camels' home A-Sun opener, before playing North Florida
on Saturday, Oct. 6.
