BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Campbell University volleyball drops its fifth
straight contest Tuesday night in Carter Gym as East Carolina takes
the win, 3-1.
Unforced errors continue
to plague the Camels, as the team's 39 misfires surpassed its 38
kills. Add that with 167 attempts on the night, and CU hit
-.006.
With the win, ECU
improves to 3-5, while Campbell slides to 4-6.
Sophomore libero Melissa
Harvey grabbed a season-high 24 digs on the night, while freshman
setter Caroline Hammersley recorded 11 in addition to her 30
assists.
Freshman Emily Werner
recorded 11 kills and six digs in the contest, while sophomore
outside hitter Ashley Weers connected with eight attacks and nine
digs. Junior middle blocker added nine kills, six digs, three block
assists and one block solo in a balanced
performance.
The Pirates' senior
middle blocker, Mignon Dubenion, led ECU offensively with 11 kills
while also grabbing nine digs. Outside hitter Kelley Wernert, also
a senior, tallied ten kills and five digs of her
own.
In the first game, both
teams seemed evenly matched, reflected by the 30-28 final. Campbell
hit .279 in that set, notching 15 kills and committing only three
errors. Of those 15 kills, Alabi and Weers combined for ten, while
Hammersley collected five digs.
Game two saw the Fighting
Camel offense slump, as it converted seven of 31 attack attempts
and committed eight errors. Meanwhile, East Carolina boasted its
best numbers of the night, converting 11 of 23 attempts with only
two errors. ECU would go on to take the game, 30-9, bringing the
teams to a game a piece.
The Pirates distanced
themselves in the third set, knocking CU back, 2-1, in a 30-13
decision.
In the fourth game, the
Fighting Camels would come slightly closer, by way of a late run
(29-19), but a wide Caitlin Bendy attack closed the match,
3-1.
Campbell volleyball will
head down I-40 to the UNC Wilmington Invitational for a two-day
tourney, beginning on Friday, Sept. 7. The Fighting Camels will
open play with Presbyterian at 7 p.m. before facing Norfolk State
on Saturday for a noon matchup in the Port City. Finally, the
Camels will meet with host UNC Wilmington in a 5 p.m.
contest.
The next time CU
volleyball will be back in Carter Gym, North Carolina A&T will
be in town; the match slated for Sept. 11.
