BUIES
CREEK,
N.C. Coming off a season-opening win at long-time rival UNC
Wilmington, Campbell University will carry a number-seven ranking
in the South Region poll into Wednesday's 7:00 p.m. home date with
Liberty.
CU ended the 2006 season
ranked 10th in the South and on Saturday improved its record to
24-13-3 since the start of the 2005 campaign. The preseason favorite to win the
Atlantic Sun Conference, Campbell is rated ahead of North Carolina,
UNC Greensboro and the College of Charleston in this week's South
poll. Wake Forest tops the
South rankings, followed by Duke, South Carolina, Furman, Clemson,
N.C. State and Campbell.
"It is an honor to be
recognized in what is arguably the most competitive region in the
country for Division I college soccer," said sixth-year Campbell
head coach Doug Hess.
"While this is a great achievement for our guys and program, it is
still very early in the college season and still requires us to
take care of business on Wednesday. Liberty is a quality opponent and I am
sure they will be using this as motivation in playing us."
Wednesday's game marks
Campbell's lone home date during the month of September. CU will play six-consecutive
matches away from home before returning to the Eakes Complex for an
Oct. 4 contest vs. Jacksonville.
The Fighting Camels (1-0-0)
rallied from one goal down to defeat the Seahawks for the
third-consecutive year. The
last seven meetings between the Eastern North Carolina schools have
been decided by one goal.
Justin Madrid equalized in the second half and Josh Elliott
provided the game-winner in the 95th minute.
Campbell also ran its unbeaten string
in overtime to seven matches (4-0-3) since a 1-0 loss at Central
Florida in 2003. Under
Coach Doug Hess' tenure (since 2002), Campbell has five wins, two
losses and five draws in extra time matches.
Liberty (1-0-0) opened its year
Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene as Adrian
Bumbut scored twice and assisted on the other goal. The Flames were picked third in a
pre-season poll of Big South Conference coaches and sports
information directors.
The last four games between
the Camels and Flames have been decided by one, or fewer,
goals. Since the series
resumed in 2002, Liberty has clamed a pair of 1-0 wins (2002,
2003), followed by a scoreless draw (2004) and a 3-2 Camel win
(2005). Last year's game at
Lynchburg, Va., was cancelled due to unplayable field conditions
caused by torrential rain in the area. Campbell leads the all-time series
10-5-1.
