WILMINGTON,
N.C.-Campbell University volleyball dropped their first match of
the UNC Wilmington "Battle at the Beach" tourney, 3-2 to the Blue
Hose of Presbyterian in a five game clash.
With
the loss, CU falls to 4-7 on the year, while the Blue Hose even out
their season at 4-4.
Leading
the way for the Camels, freshman Taylor Deering posted yet another
double-double with 14 kills and ten digs in the match. Junior Femi
Alabi also notched a 14-kill night, adding three block solos and
three block assists. Defensive standout Melissa Harvey grabbed
another double digit night for digs, totaling 12 while sophomore
Sarah Hill added nine.
For
Presbyterian, senior Lauren Mason posted her third straight 30-kill
game while junior Justine Lanchester totaled 19 on the night.
Freshman libero Elizabeth Heineman also collected a game high 22
digs.
In
the first game, the Blue Hose jumped out to a quick lead, scoring
the first three points of the match on a couple of
Campbell misfires and a Justine Lanchester kill. The Camels clawed
back, however, taking the lead on a Caroline Hammersley ace,
8-7.
With
the set knotted at 16-all, four straight Campbell errors gave
Presbyterian the advantage, as they went on to take the first game,
30-19, on a 14-3 run.
Game
two saw the Camels bounce back, knotting the match at one game a
piece. The teams battled for the lead tying four times before
Harvey's service ace finally put the Camels up, 19-18 en route to
an 11-4 run as the Fighting Camels closed out game two, 30-22.
Leading
by as much as 13 in the third frame, the Blue Hose, capitalized on
17 kills off 32 attempts to get the win, 30-19. The Fighting Camel
offense mustered only four kills and five errors in the game, as
Presbyterian jumped back on top, 2-1 in the match.
In
a tight game four, the Fighting Camels responded again, dishing out
a .390 hitting percentage to better Presbyterian's .333 in a 30-27
win. Despite 22 Blue Hose kills, the Fighting Camels played nearly
perfect offense, as CU did not commit an error in the set.
In
the deciding game, the Blue Hose topped the Camels 10-3 in kills,
hitting a stellar .444 to Campbell's .077 in a 15-9 result.
The
Fighting Camels will be in action again in Hanover Gym tomorrow,
taking on Norfolk State at noon, followed by a 5 p.m. matchup with
host, UNCW, to close out the weekend.
