JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. Senior Marlena
Murphy tallied 12 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to
lead the charge but Campbell still fell to conference rival East
Tennessee State, 72-53, on Monday night at the Memorial Center in
Johnson, Tenn.
Redshirt sophomore Lynisha
Ochogu also reached double figures with 12 points for the
Camels. Ochogu also pulled in a career-high six rebounds. Junior
Lauren Arthur also chipped in nine points
for the CU offense
The Lady Bucs were led by TaRonda Wiles and
Jenny Norman who scored 16 points each. Norman also was an
impressive 7-for-8 from the field. LaTisha Belcher was the third
member of ETSU in double figures with 12.
CU (6-11, 1-3 A-Sun), after taking a lead into
the break, came out cold to start the second half and didn't score
their first points until Murphy made a jumper at the 9:35 mark.
Unfortunately, the Lady Bucs (6-9, 2-1 A-Sun) in that span
continued a run they started in the first half that netted them 20
in a row to take a 14-point lead, 40-26 before the Murphy
jumper.
The Camels kept fighting in the second and got
the lead down to 12 with 2:15 to play on a layup from junior
Jessica Mack. The Lady Bucs then went on
a 7-0 rally to take control of the game for good on their way to a
72-53 victory.
The Camels hung tough in the first half against
the media preseason choice in the conference. CU took a 26-24 lead
into the break thanks to nine points from Ochogu. Murphy led the
team with seven rebounds at the half. The Buccaneers were led by
eight from Wiles.
CU now returns home to take on Gardner-Webb on
Saturday, Jan 19 at 1 p.m.
Notes: The Camels have now lost
all five meetings all-time against the Lady Bucs ... this was
Ochogu's first start of the season and the third of her career ...
this was the fifth different starting lineup Campbell has used this
season .. this was Murphy's 11th double-double of
the season.
