BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Campbell sophomore Kelin Bidelspach went a
perfect 5-0 in last weekend's Colonial Athletic Association Duals,
earning him his first career wrestler of the week honor, announced
by the conference office on Tuesday.
"It's a much deserved honor," said CU head coach Billy Greene.
"Kelin really wrestled his heart out and did a great job for
himself and for his team, being unranked coming into the weekend.
He's definitely set himself up nicely for the conference
championships."
The 141 pound sophomore from Hanover, Pa. earned wins over three of the
conference's top-six competitors, including Boston University's
Joey Whitaker (No. 3, dec. 2-1), Rider's Fred Rogers (No. 4, dec.
5-3) and Binghamton's Anwar Goeres (No. 6, fall 1:35, his fifth pin
of the season).
With the
perfect weekend, Bidelspach extended his overall mark to 17-2 this
season, with an 11-1 dual record, going 6-0 in the Colonial. In the
win over Sacred Heart, Bidelspach downed red-shirt freshman Nick
Carvallaro, 4-0, for three points.
Bidelspach is now listed as third in the conference at 141 behind
nationally ranked No. 2 Charles Griffin of Hofstra and Old
Dominion's No. 15 Ryan Williams, and is Campbell's first ranked
wrestler since the preseason.
Bidelspach also becomes the first CU wrestler to earn CAA Wrestler
of the Week under Greene's tenure and the first since Lantz Nixon
took the honor in February of 2002.
Fighting Camel wrestling returns to action tonight in Carter Gym,
facing American University, with matches beginning at 7 p.m.
