BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Campbell
closed to within two halfway through the second half, but couldn't
catch Lipscomb in dropping its fifth straight game, 58-50, on
Monday evening.
The second half began very
slowly for the CU offense with the team being held scoreless until
the 13:50 mark, at which time Lipscomb had built a 13-point
advantage (30-17). Sophomore Kelly Hufstedler then
ignited the offense with a three from the right corner, as the
Camels went on a 12-1 rally of its own to close to with two (31-29)
on sophomore Lauren Arthur's triple from the right
wing. Lipscomb just as quickly put together a 15-5 rally of its
own, keyed by a pair of threes from Catie Woods, to firmly take
control of the game
The Camels (5-10, 0-2 A-Sun)
were led in defeat by senior Marlena Murphy's
ninth double-double of the season. Murphy totaled 17 points and 15
rebounds. This was also the fourth game that Murphy has pulled in
15 or more rebounds in a game this season. Sophomore
Lindsay Smithberger used a late-game barrage of
threes to finish with 15 points for CU.
The Lady Bisons, who came into
the game on a five-game skid and had fallen in 10 of its last 11
games, received 16 points from both sophomores Jilian Partin and
Woods to stop the slide. Partin also pulled down 10 rebounds and
recorded seven steals to clinch head coach Frank Bennett's 550th
career win.
The game was tied at the 17 at
the break with the teams combining to only shoot 13-for-51 from the
field. Murphy led the CU offense with six points, while the LU's
Dana Carrigan knocked down a pair of three-point field goals for
six points.
In the second half, the Lady
Bisons (3-12, 1-1 A-Sun) started to heat-up from beyond the arc and
went 6-for-12 (50 percent). The team knocked down 10-of-18 attempts
in the second stanza for an overall field-goal percentage of 38
percent. The Camels continued to have shooting problems and while
they improved their shooting to 29 percent in the second half
(9-of-31), the squad still only shot 27 percent for the game.
Both teams struggled
from the free-throw line with the Camels hitting 54 percent
(14-of-26) and the Lady Bisons hitting 58 percent (15-of-26).
The Camels lost their fifth
straight game despite outrebounding visiting Lipscomb by 17
(49-to-32). Among the 49 rebounds for Campbell were 25 on the
offensive glass. CU did knock down six threes, but were outdone by
nine from the Lipscomb.
CU now travels to Spartanburg,
S.C. to take on USC-Upstate on Saturday, while Lipscomb returns
home to battle against Belmont also on Saturday.
Notes: The all-time
series with Lipscomb now favors the Lady Bisons by a slight 5-4
margin ... the five-game losing streak is a season-long drought for
CU and the longest since Jan. 27-Feb. 10 of last season when the
team also dropped five in a row.
