JACKSONVILLE, FLA.-Despite 10 kills, nine digs
and three blocks from Emily Werner, Campbell volleyball surrendered
a 3-0 (23-25, 20-25, 18-25) loss to Jacksonville on the road in
Atlantic Sun play Saturday afternoon at Swisher
Gymnasium.
The Camels fall to 6-15
overall and 4-8 in league action, while JU improves to 13-6 and 8-3
in A-Sun matches.
Campbell junior Sarah Hill contributed
four of her nine total kills in the opening set, trying to put the
Camels up early, but Jacksonville's Sara Bendorf and
Aiden Yeager combined for nine points to lead the Dolphins to a
25-23 win. Junior libero Shelley Walroth defended eight CU attacks
in the set, while Werner was CU's dig leader, grabbing five in set
number one. Werner and senior Katie Stallings each contributed
three kills in the loss.
In the second frame, Werner
came alive with six kills to pace the Camels, but Bendorf tacked on
eight for the Dolphins on 13 error-less attempts, as JU
edged Campbell, 25-20. Freshman setter Hope
Leatigaga added 10 assists and four digs for Campbell, while Walroth snagged
another five digs.
The Dolphins clinched the
match in the third set, holding the Camels to a -.059 hitting
percentage. Campbell converted eight of 34 attack
attempts with 10 errors in the frame, while JU was able to post 13
kills as a unit in the win.
Werner's 11.5 points
led Campbell in the match, while Hill
added 9.5 on her nine kills and a single block assist. A native
of Rockford, Ill., Hill also registered nine
digs. Leatigaga led the CU defense with 10 digs, tacking on 25
assists.
The CU blocking game was
again strong, grabbing six total, the 13th time this
season the club has amassed five or more. Werner, Caitlin Bendy and
Ashley Weers accounted for three block assists each, while
Stallings nabbed two.
Bendorf led the Dolphins with
14 kills and 10 digs, also coming up with two blocks, one solo and
one assisted. Yeager ended the afternoon with nine kills, while
junior outside hitter Brooke Singleton and sophomore middle blocker
Abby Gruenbacher added seven kills each.
Walroth led the way
defensively with 16 digs, while freshman setter Ashley August
racked up 19 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore setter Hannah Munneke
tacked on 15 helpers for the Dolphins.
The Camels will return to
action next Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. inside the John W. Pope, Jr.
Convocation Center in Buies Creek, hosting A-Sun foe Kennesaw State. Campbell will then entertain Mercer on
Saturday at 5 p.m.
