BUIES
CREEK,
N.C. The latest Academic Progress Rating (APR) leaders were
recently released and Campbell was named in the elite group of
schools. The wrestling
team, led by head coach Billy Greene, was rated as one of the most
improved teams in the nation during the 2007-07 school year.
The National Wrestling
Coaches Association (NWCA) announced the list of schools who had
improved their APR rating more than 15 points. The wrestling squad checked in at No.
3 in the list of most improved schools after they jumped up 22
points.
"I was pleased to see
Campbell University wrestling recognized by the National Wrestling
Coaches' Association on their list of "most improved APR scores"
among Division I wrestling programs," said Greene. "Of course, the true credit belongs to
the returning wrestling squad members that made the commitment to
stay at Campbell and stay eligible."
What makes this
accomplishment even more impressive is the fact that the wrestling
team had a poor APR in Greene's first season.
"In my first year as head
wrestling coach we had a very poor APR performance, Green
said. "By way of
explanation, the APR score that is annually reported by the NCAA is
a four-year rate of measure. Even though over the past 3 years our
APR scores have been well above average in comparison to all other
Division I wrestling programs, the poor APR performance in my first
year of coaching continues to burden us. Thankfully, this data will be cycled
out of our four-year APR cohort starting with the 2009 - 2010
academic year."
The wrestling team was
honored earlier this season by having one of the best GPA's among
Division 1 programs. The
team was ninth in the nation after posting a 3.109 during the
2007-08 school year.
"I am proud of the commitment
the returning wrestling squad members have made to the essence of
our team vision: compete to win as a collegiate wrestler during
your 4 years of eligibility, leave Campbell with a degree, and earn
a grade point average within your degree that will qualify you as a
competitive applicant in your respective professions."
