BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Head coach
Wanda Watkins has announced the addition of four players to the
2009
Campbell women's basketball recruiting class. Monique Spry
(Beddingfield HS), Alyse Hall (Southern Nash HS), Tonisha Baker
(T.W. Andrews HS) and Courtney Cannon (Itawamba Community College)
will all suit up for the Lady Camels for the 2009-10
season.
"This recruiting class will
bring needed athleticism to our squad," said Watkins. "They will
assist us offensively as they all have a scorer's mentality. Their
athleticism will also be an asset to us defensively as well in
moving us more towards an up tempo game."
Spry will come to Buies Creek
after a stellar career at Beddingfield High School, where she
claimed all-conference honors all three seasons, including first
team accolades as a junior last year.
"Monique is an athletic,
quick guard who can score through penetration or on the perimeter
from two or three point territory," said Watkins. "She gets after
it defensively and her quickness will be an asset to us in all
phases of the game."
A year ago, Spry was named
Eastern Carolina Conference Player of the Year by the league as
well as the Wilson Daily Times, while earning regional MVP and
all-district honors. Spry also garnered all-region honors as a
sophomore, after helping Beddingfield to a 3-A North Carolina State
Championship during her rookie of the year campaign in the 2005-06
season. The guard averaged 20 points, 4.2 rebounds, 5.1 assists and
3.5 steals per game as a junior, after putting up 14.5 points as a
sophomore.
Hall will join the Lady
Camels from Southern Nash High School as a three-time first team
all-conference and all-area performer who will add to her already
whopping total of 1,174 career points during her senior
year.
"Alyse is an athletic slasher
who will benefit us on both ends of the floor," said Watkins. "She
will enhance our rebounding from the perimeter and has a really
quick first step. She is also an excellent student-
athlete."
Hall,
a 5-foot-7 guard, posted 16.5 point per game as a junior along with
7.5 rebounds in route to a North Carolina Coaches Association
Second Team All-District selection. The Bailey, N.C. native
produced similar numbers as a sophomore with 17 points and eight
boards per game, while posting 13 points and seven rebounds as a
freshman.
Baker
is another guard who totaled big numbers as a junior, notching over
17 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists while
earning Piedmont Triad 3-A All Conference honors.
"Tonisha is a talented
point guard who will make everyone around her better," said
Watkins. "She can pass, slash or score on the perimeter. Her size
and athleticism will enhance our guard play."
The
T.W. Andrews star helped her squad to a conference runner-up finish
as a sophomore, while garnering a Wachovia Holiday Classic
All-Tournament selection, as well as and All-Northwest team honor
in 2007. Baker also wrote her name in the school's record books
last season, scoring 30 points against rival Southwest
Guilford.
Cannon
is the last of the foursome, transferring in from Itawamba Community College in
Tupelo, Miss. after two seasons.
"Courtney brings athleticism
to our squad along with two years of junior college experience. She
is a slasher who can score from three point territory as well. She
is an excellent student-athlete who plans to major in accounting
here at Campbell."
From Starkville, Miss.,
Cannon will be the first Mississippi native to ever suit up for
Watkins, who just began her 28th year at the helm for
the Lady Camels. Cannon was an all-state and all-Region 23
Tournament selections a year ago after averaging 10.5 points, 4.5
rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game for the Lady
Indians.
She also led the team from
the charity stripe, knocking down 75 percent of her free throws
(84-112). Cannon started all 30 games for ICC through the 2007-08
season, and will transfer a 4.0 grade point average in
accounting.
Cannon,
who was a division selection her senior season in high school after
averaging 16 points a game, was named scholar-athlete in her last
three years at Starkville High School in addition to team offensive
MVP her junior and senior campaigns. So far this season, the
5-foot-10 guard is averaging 9.5 points and 1.5 steals, rebounds
and assists through six games for the 26th-ranked Lady
Indians.
"This group of young ladies
will be wonderful additions to our program. We look forward to them
joining our Campbell family as each of these ladies come from
outstanding, well-coached and successful programs."
Watkins and the Lady Camels
will take on Longwood this Saturday, Nov. 22 inside the new John W.
Pope, Jr. Convocation Center, with a 1 p.m. tip.
