BUIES CREEK, N.C. Campbell University redshirt sophomore
Charles Fiore
has been named to the ESPN
The Magazine/Academic All-District 3 Football University
Division first team by the College Sports Information Directors of
America (CoSIDA).
A
Kernersville, N.C. native, Fiore has played in all nine games this
season with five starts at defensive end. Fiore owns a grade-point
average of 3.45 as a Religion major.
A
designated campus leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes,
Fiore went on a two-month mission to China over the summer.
Fiore
also has been the football team's representative on the
Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) in each of his three years
on campus, while also making the Dean's List twice.
On
the gridiron, Fiore has amassed a 17 total tackles, including a
pair of tackles for loss, to go along with half a sack and a
quarterback hurry this season. He tied his career-best with four
tackles against Davidson on Nov. 1.
Fiore
was one of 19 Pioneer Football League players to gain academic
all-district honors. Dayton tallied seven on first-team
all-district 4 team (Bart Bergfeld, Patrick McCormick,
Steve
McDonald, Corey Vossler, Joe Ries, Brandon Wingeier and
Sean Heenan)
and six second team all-district 4 honorees (James Ward, Joe Gulick, Ryan Pollock, Marcus Overman,
Matt Smyth
and Kalen
Hemmelgarn) for a total of 13 student-athletes. San Diego
(Christopher
Gianelli District 8) and Valparaiso (Adam Rundh District
5) also had representation on first teams. In District 3,
Campbell's Fiore was joined by three from Davidson (Kirk Konert, Peter Bakke, Myles Porter) on the first
team.
Fiore
and the rest of the first-team all-district selection will now be
eligible for the Academic All-America® team, which will be
announced Nov. 25.
CoSIDA's
1,800 members in the United States and Canada nominate players for
the ESPN The Magazine
/ Academic All-America® recognition. To be
eligible, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in
academic standing, have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point
average, and be a starter or a key reserve on his or her team.
CoSIDA
members vote on the all-district teams; then a national panel
selects the Academic All-America squads from all first-team
all-district choices. District 3 includes all NCAA Division I
schools in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and
Virginia.
