DELAND, FLA.-Stetson held Campbell
to just 24 percent shooting from the floor, taking a 60-50 win over
the Lady Camels in Atlantic Sun women's basketball action Monday
inside the Edmunds Center.
The Lady Camels fall to 4-3
overall with their second consecutive loss and 0-2 in A-Sun play.
Stetson, meanwhile, moves to 3-4 on the year with a 2-0 league
record.
Campbell dominated the glass, pulling
down 56 rebounds, including 29 offensive boards, while the Hatters
grabbed only 32. The overall total was just three shy of the Lady
Camels' all-time A-Sun record of 59, set against Florida Atlantic
in 1999.
Campbell also went without a made
three point basket, launching a season-high 18 attempts in the
loss. It was the first time the Lady Camels went without a three
since Gardner-Webb shut out CU in March of last season at the A-Sun
Tournament.
Making her first start of the
season, junior forward Gara Bell notched a double-double, posting
14 points and 14 rebounds, adding a steal. Bell's 14 rebounds were
a career high. Senior guard Jessica Mack put out a solid
performance for the Lady Camels, recording 10 points, eight
rebounds and four steals, while freshman guard Amanda O'Neill
reached nine points that included seven in the second half. Posts
Lauren Yesh and Ashley Williamson combined for 13 points and 12
rebounds against the Hatters.
Stetson had a duo of guards
in double figures, as senior Sharnesha Smith and freshman Jessica
Bivins went for 13 and 12, respectively. Smith also registered
seven assists, while Bivins notched two rebounds and a pair of
steals. Sophomore guard Tierra Brown collected nine points in the
win, while junior forward Ashli Jackson tallied eight.
The Hatters opened the game
with a 5-1 advantage, holding the Lady Camels without a field goal
until the 15:07 mark when junior forward Gara Bell knocked down a
jumper in the lane. After Bell landed three more baskets, another
Lady Camel finally hit a shot from the floor, as junior guard
Lynisha Ochogu notched a lay-in with 7:24 on the clock.
At the break, Stetson held a
27-21 lead over the Lady Camels, who shot just over 21 percent in
the opening stanza. Bell owned four of the team's seven field
goals, while Ochogu and senior guard Jessica Mack combined for nine
points.
Freshman Jessica Bivins and
sophomore Tierra Brown each logged eight points to lead the Hatters
in the first half.
After the break, the Lady
Camels would keep pace with Stetson, trimming the Hatter lead back
to six by way of a Yesh basket at the 8:25 mark, bring the score to
46-40. from there, however the Lady Camels did not connect on a
field goal for nearly eight minutes, a drought that saw the Hatters
gain a 12-6 advantage to earn a 12-point lead with under a minute
remaining. Williamson and O'Neill each added a bucket for CU with
time expiring, but Stetson would hold on to the lead, taking a
60-50 final.
The Lady Camels will now
return home for a pair of non-conference matchups, beginning with
UNC Asheville on Thursday, Dec. 18. North Carolina A&T will
head into the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center on Saturday,
Dec. 20.
