BUIES
CREEK,
N.C. Campbell University baseball head coach Greg Goff
announced two additional signees for the early recruitment period
that concluded on Nov. 19.
The commitments of Cameron Nelson and Matt Sergey push the 2009-10
early signing class to six members.
"These two young men complete
a very solid recruiting class for the 2009-10 year," said Goff.
"I am very excited that
these young men want to be a part of this program here at
Campbell. They both have
committed to the academic and athletic standards that we have set
for our players, and they are looking forward to this being a big
part of their lives for the next few years. We fully expect both Cam and Matt to
be impact players for us, and help this program achieve all of the
goals that we have set for ourselves."
A 6-foot,
190-pound outfielder/pitcher, Nelson will join the Camels from
South Florida Community College in Avon Park, Fla. As a freshman, he helped lead Coach
Rick Hitt's squad to a 36-21 record while batting .321 with seven
doubles, five triples, four home runs, 12 stolen bases and 22
RBI. The left-hander also
posted a perfect 5-0 record with 21 strikeouts in 24 innings on the
mound for the Panthers.
Nelson prepped at Coral
Springs (Fla.) High School, earning three varsity letters while
hitting .468 with 12 stolen bases, 12 doubles, and 37 RBI. In 2006, he earned team MVP and
all-conference honors, and was selected for the National Power
Showcase.
This fall, Nelson was
selected to represent the Suncoast Conference as one of the
league's top sophomores in the Florida Fall All-Star
Showcase.
"Cameron is a left-handed
hitting outfielder/left-handed pitcher that will be counted on to
not only produce in our lineup, but also give us some added depth
on our pitching staff," said Goff. "With his aggressive approach and
mentality at the plate and on the base paths, he will be able to
step right in and be a big factor in our offense. He is a
hard-nosed player that comes to play everyday, and we are looking
forward to getting him on campus next fall."
Sergey, is a 6-foot-4,
215-pound right-handed pitcher and will to Campbell after a
two-year stint at Broward College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. As a freshman, Sergey help lead
Coach Bob Deutschman's Seahawks to a 33-17 record while compiling a
4-1 record on the mound with 36 strikeouts in 42 innings, and
posting a 3.12 ERA.
A graduate of South
Plantation High School, Sergey was selected in the 45th round of
the 2007 Major League Baseball first-year player draft by the
Milwaukee Brewers, becoming the first player ever to be drafted out
of his high school.
That summer he played for the
prestigious Florida Bombers Baseball Club, winning a national
championship and playing with 10 other drafted players on that
club.
Sergey was also selected this
fall to represent the Florida Southern Conference as one of the
league's top sophomores in the Florida
Fall All-Star
Showcase.
"Matt is a big, strong, hard
throwing right-hander who will have a chance to be on of the best
pitchers in our league," said Goff. "He brings an intense competitive
spirit that will be an added bonus to our pitching staff. I am very excited to get Matt
here on campus and get him into our program to watch him develop
over the next few years. We
could not be happier to sign this outstanding young man, that has a
lot of potential, and we are looking forward to helping him reach
that potential while he is here."
Nelson and Sergey join fellow
newcomers Blake Boyce, Matt Marksberry,
Logan Self, and Noah Zipko in the 2009 Fighting Camel early signing
class.
