BUIES
CREEK,
N.C.-With only a pair of tune-ups remaining before the Atlantic Sun
schedule kicks into full swing, Campbell women's basketball will
head to Winston-Salem State on Monday, Dec. 22, with tipoff inside
the C. E. Gaines Center scheduled for 7 p.m.
Last time out, the Lady
Camels suffered a 72-54 setback at the hands of North Carolina
A&T inside the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center. The loss
was the first inside the building for Campbell, who had been
victorious in its previous four tries. The hot start is the best
since 1998, when the Lady Camels matched that mark, losing in their
fifth home game of the year.
NC A&T senior forward
Brittanie Taylor-James and junior guard TaWuana Cook combined for
41 points against Campbell on Saturday, sending CU to 5-4 on the
season. Junior center Ashley Williamson posted her third
double-double of the season in the loss to lead the Lady Camels,
pouring in 16 points along with 10 rebounds. Eight of Williamson's
10 boards were of the offensive variety, over half of the team's 15
offensive boards.
Junior forward Geami Britt
tallied eight points for the Lady Camels with four rebounds and
four assists, while Gara Bell, another junior forward, grabbed
seven points and five rebounds. Bell also racked up two blocks in
the loss.
Senior guard Jessica Mack,
after going scoreless against UNC Asheville on Thursday, drained
six points to go along with three boards, with the freshman trio of
Kate Cloxton, Katelyn Bass and Amanda O'Neill combined for 10
points in the game.
Williamson has been one of
the A-Sun's most consistent performers through the season thus far,
averaging 10.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, ranking the
Colonial Heights, Va. native 19th and 3rd in
the league, respectively. The third-year Lady Camel also ranks
seventh in the conference in field goal percentage at .461. Forward
Geami Britt, another Campbell junior, stands just ahead of
Williamson in the category at .464 percent, currently sitting at
sixth.
WSSU will head into Monday
night's game at 0-9 on the year after dropping a 55-43 contest to
Big South member Liberty last weekend. Sophomore guard MaLisa
Bumpus was the only Ram to score in double-figures, posting 13
points off the bench. The game was the first for Bumpus all
season.
With an exception to Bumpus,
WSSU does not have a player averaging double figures. Sophomore
guard Rene Rector, does, however, record 9.9 points per game, while
sophomore center Vontisha Woods is posting 8.9 and senior guard
Keoshia Worthy is clocking 8.1 per contest.
The teams have one common
opponent this year, with both squads dropping decisions to A-Sun
foe Florida Gulf Coast. The Rams fell to FGCU 57-43 in the UNC
Greensboro Marriott Classic, while Campbell was beat out by the
Eagles 73-47 in Ft. Myers, Fla.
By the
book, Campbell and Winston-Salem State have met once in women's
basketball ever, but the contest did not actually happen. A meeting
was scheduled between the pair on Jan. 22, 1983 in Winston-Salem,
N.C., during Wanda Watkins' second season as head coach at CU, but
WSSU was forced to forfeit. Campbell went on to finish the season
14-10 while Winston-Salem State went on to a 12-11
season.
The Lady Camels will have one
game left in 2008 after their battle with the Rams, heading to
Winthrop on Dec. 30 for what will be their final non-conference
tilt of the season.
