BUIES CREEK, N.C.-After a
lengthy break from competition, Campbell women's basketball, off to
its best start in nine seasons, will take on High Point in
non-conference action Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. inside the John W.
Pope, Jr. Convocation Center.
"Having the
break is a healthy thing," said head coach Wanda Watkins. "It gives
our kids a chance to have some time off for Thanksgiving and be
with their families. I think that the practice time has been very
valuable because we've had some things that we've needed to work on
after each game. The time has been great, not only so we can
prepare for
High Point, but to work on and elevate certain areas of our
game."
By the time the Lady Camels
take the Gore Arena floor on Tuesday, it will have been 15 days
since their last game. In that contest, Campbell posted a five-year
high in points with a 90-81 victory. In fact, the last
time Watkins and the Lady Camels reached that plateau, it was in a
107-90 win over then Atlantic Sun foe Florida Atlantic on Feb. 13,
2003. The total was also the most points a Campbellteam has
scored on the road since Jan. 10, 1998, when the Lady Camels took a
93-55 win at Samford.
"I was
pleasantly surprised by our offensive output at Charleston
Southern, but defensively, we could have done a better job," said
Watkins. "They are such an up-tempo team, and you play faster even
when you're trying to control the tempo against a team like that.
We've worked really hard to get better at that."
Five Lady Camels ended the
game in double figures, as junior forward Geami Britt led the way
with a career high 18 points and six rebounds. Freshmen guards Kate
Cloxton and Amanda O'Neill, notching their first collegiate starts,
registered 17 and 14 points, respectively.
Sophomore forward Lauren Yesh
posted 13 points and five boards in the game, with senior guard
Jessica Mack rounding out the bunch at 10 tallies. Junior center Ashley Williamson and senior guard
Lauren Arthur chipped in eight points each.
The win over
Charleston Southern pushed CU's record to 3-1, a mark the team has
not hit since the 1999-2000 season, a year that also coincides with
the program's last conference championship.
Three Lady
Camels are currently averaging double figure points, with Britt,
Yesh and Ashley Williamson maintaining the CU offense. Britt leads
the trio, tallying 12.0, while Yesh and Williamson are collecting
11.8 and 11.0, respectively.
The last
time three Lady Camels finished the season in double figures was
2001-02, when April Cromartie (17.1), Stacy Hinkle (13.0) and
Crystal Clary (12.3) accomplished the feat. Cromartie earned her
second consecutive conference player of the year award after the
2001-02 season.
"I'm grateful for this start,
but it is very early," added Watkins. "We have a tough game coming
up with High Point. They are a very athletic and well-rounded team.
They rebound and shoot the ball well, and while they are young,
High Point is talented and scrappy."
The
Panthers will head to Buies Creek after a matchup with Southeastern
Conference foe South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. on
Saturday.
Friday's game will be the
fourth of four games in eight days for the 2-5 High Point 2-5
squad. The Panthers will be entering that contest after suffering a
69-80 setback on Wednesday night against Georgia Southern. Freshman
Shamia Brown led the team with a career-high 20 points while
sophomore Jurica Hargraves posted 12.
Hargraves is averaging a Big
South leading 15.4 per game while Brown is adding 12.6 points per
game. Brown is pulling down a team best 6.6 boards per game.
Mackenzie Maier is posting 10.1 points per game and notching a
League best 2.4 blocks per game. Frances Fields is also tops in the
League, averaging 5.57 assists per game.
After facing the Panthers,
the Lady Camels will begin Atlantic Sun play, making the swing to
Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson next weekend.
