DAVIDSON, N.C.-Despite the absence of a 141 or 149 pound wrestler
due to illness, Campbell fell by a narrow 26-19 margin Saturday
night to the Davidson Wildcats.
While the Camels fall to 2-19-1 on the year, Davidson moves to
3-11, also taking a dual from visiting Anderson College.
"Despite the loss I wasn't disappointed," said Campbell head coach
Billy Greene. "We had some holes in the lineup with a lot of our
guys being sick or injured, but the guys that did wrestle showed a
lot of effort."
After a 16-0 technical fall set the Camels back 5-0 at 125, junior
Trevour Smith collected an 8-6 overtime win at 133, defeating
Davidson's Alex Radsky. A pair of Campbell forfeits gave the
Wildcats a 17-3 advantage, but CU's Jake Fose, a freshman at 157,
took his sixth bout in seven tries, scoring a 10-2 major decision
over Carl Sandercock, and Ryan Ham, another freshman, won at 165,
downing Joe McGinley by a 4-1 mark, cutting the score to 17-10.
Davidson then took the next pair of matches with bonus points,
earning a technical fall and a major decision going into the final
two weight classes.
Parker Burns came away with a forfeit at 197 pounds, before senior
heavyweight Rob Yoder matched up with Charlie Wolff for the night's
final bout. Yoder, a Clemmons, N.C. native, took Wolff into
overtime, eventually earning the win, 3-2.
"All in all, I think we take a lot of positives from this weekend,"
added Greene.
Greene and the Fighting Camels will return to action next Saturday,
heading to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina and Duquesne.
