BUIES CREEK, N.C.-After an hour and 20 minute rain delay, Campbell
outscored Winston-Salem State 12-0 (five innings) and 8-0 (six
innings), taking both games of a doubleheader Tuesday night in
softball action at the Eakes Complex.
The Camels move to 11-3 on the season with the pair of wins,
meanwhile WSSU falls to 5-5 with the losses.
Four different Camels enjoyed four-RBI nights in the two contests,
with freshman second baseman Keeli Michael leading the way. The
Welcome, N.C. native connected on 4-of-6 at bats in the twinbill,
knocking two doubles while also scoring a run. Sophomore catcher
Amanda Littlejohn, also driving in four, did so on a 2-for-6 effort
at the plate, while outfielder Lizzie Goldbach, another freshman,
plated four runners on one swing, an inside the park grand slam in
game one of the night.
Katie Hinton, a freshman shortstop, scored a total of five times
for
Campbell, also driving in two runs. Freshman Amanda Miller and
sophomore Robin Leathers also scored three times each on the night,
while sophomore Ashley Jones pushed one run across the plate.
With the Camels up 1-0 in the second inning of game one, CU managed
three more runs, as Hinton, Michael and Littlejohn picked up RBI.
In the Campbell third, Hinton grabbed another RBI while Michael
scored two on a double to put CU up 7-0 before Hinton reached the
plate on a wild pitch.
Campbell continued its offensive production in the fourth, as
Goldbach pulled a pitch down the right field line and into the
corner with the bases loaded with Camels, scoring all three, and
herself, earning the rare inside the park grand slam, giving CU the
12-0 advantage.
Freshman right-hander Lauren Stephan picked up the win to go to 5-2
on the season, tallying four strikeouts without giving up a run or
a walk with three hits in the five inning complete game shutout.
Junior pitcher Amber Shore was charged with the loss for the Lady
Rams, giving up 10 runs, nine earned, on three hits with five walks
and two strikeouts.
In
the nightcap, the Camels led 1-0 after four and a half innings of
play before the CU offense pushed six across in the bottom of the
fifth. Michael, Littlejohn, Love and Leathers all drove in runs for
the Camels in the inning. In the sixth with two runners on base,
Littlejohn batted a hit up the middle to score Hinton from third to
give the Camels an 8-0 win in six innings.
Sophomore pitcher Brittany Stanley tossed six innings of shutout
softball, holding the Rams to only two hits with a career high 11
strikeouts and only two walks, moving her mark to 6-1 on the
season. Ashley Boswell, a sophomore in the circle for WSSU, gave up
eight runs, all earned, scattering 11 hits in five innings of work,
striking out and walking two batters in the loss.
Campbell
will part
for California this weekend, where the Camels will take part in two
tournaments, one at Santa Clara and the other at Stanford, making a
stop at Fresno State along the way.
