CREEK, N.C.Campbell will play the final game of its
three-game road swing with a trip to Macon, Ga. to take on Mercer
on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
"This is
another big game for us," head coach Wanda
Watkins. "With only seven games remaining in the
conference season and with the conference race being as tight as it
is every game's importance is magnified. I've been impressed by
what I've seen of Mercer on film. They are a good transition team
that we will need to slow down with our transition defense. Their
point guard in impressive and is one of the leading scorers in the
conference."
Campbell (9-13, 4-5 A-Sun) leads the
all-time series with the Bears 20-10 dating back to the first game
in 1988. CU is one a three-game winning streak against Mercer after
sweeping the both games last season.
The Camels, after trailing by as many as 27 points in the
first half, stormed back to get to within nine points on three
occasions in the second half in a 70-57 loss to Jacksonville on
Monday. Senior Marlena Murphy led the
offensive charge with 14 of her 16 points in the second stanza.
Murphy also tied for the team lead with junior Jessica Mack with eight rebounds each.
Murphy is
averaging 13.2 points and 10.8 rebounds per game to lead the
Camels. Murphy is also the conference leader in rebounding and
ranks eighth in the NCAA. Fellow senior Maggie
Rich is second on the team at 7.4 points an outing. Junior
guard Lauren Arthur has hit nine threes
on the recent road trip and is averaging 16 points a game over the
last week. Mack has scored in double figures in each of her last
two games.
Mercer
(4-18, 1-8 A-Sun) lost to East Tennessee State 88-57 on Monday.
Sophomore LaToya Jackson led the team
with 15 points against the Buccaneers.
On
the year, Jackson is averaging 12.1 points a game to lead the team
and rank 11th in the conference. The sophomore also
leads the conference at 2.27 three-point field goals a game and
ranks fifth with a .826 free-throw percentage. Redshirt senior
Sarah Russell is second on the team in
scoring and ranks eighth in the conference in rebounding
(6.4).
Overall, Mercer is an excellent shooting team and are
second in the conference in free-throw percentage (.706) and third
in three-point percentage (.332). The Camels are the best overall
rebounding team in the conference at nearly 43 rebounds a game
(42.4). CU is also fourth in league in defense (62.6) and seventh
in scoring (59.0).

Campbell returns home to take on Kennesaw State on Monday, Feb. 11
at 7 p.m. The day will be held in conjunction with the "Think Pink"
promotion where all attendees wearing pink for breast cancer
awareness will be given free admission to the game.
