SANTA CLARA, CA-Campbell
softball took the field on day one of the Santa Clara Bronco
Classic earning a split, dropping a 5-3 contest to Providence and
taking a 5-2 win over the hosting Broncos to close out the evening.
The Camels move to 12-4 on
the year, as eighth year head coach Drew Peterson earned his
200th win wearing the orange and black.
In game one against
Providence, CU grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first
when freshman third baseman Amanda Miller notched a pair of
RBI.
The Friars got on the board
in the top of the third, driving in one, but Miller, a Dunn, N.C.
native, knocked another home in the third with a single, giving the
Camels a 3-1 advantage after three innings of play. Providence,
however, scored another pair of Friars in the fifth and seventh
innings, leaving Campbell with a 5-3 loss to start the
trip.
Lauren Stephan, a freshman
hurler for CU, took the loss, moving to 5-3 on the season in a five
walk, one strikeout day, giving up five runs, three earned.
Providence's Kathryn Sullivan picked up the win, striking out five
and walking three Camels.
In game two of the tourney,
the Camels matched up with the host Broncos of Santa Clara.
Sophomore Brittany Stanley flirted with a no-hitter, giving up her
first base-knock in the sixth inning, while powering a pair of solo
homers at the plate herself.
Lake Elsinore, Ca. native and CU sophomore
Amanda Littlejohn earned a 4-for-4 day at the dish, driving in one
and scoring a single time.
The Camels broke the 0-0
deadlock in the third, as junior Ashley Jones scored two RBI,
doubling in freshman Katie Hinton as well as Littlejohn. After
Stanley knocked a homer in the top of the fourth, the Camels held a
3-0 lead.
In the fifth, Campbell added
another run, calling a double-steal to score freshman Amanda Cline
while Jones took second. Stanley then launched her second homer in
the sixth, giving the Camels a 5-0 lead.
The Broncos finally grabbed a
hit on Stanley in the sixth, also scoring a runner. SCU added
another run in the seventh, but the Camels came away with the 5-2
victory.
With the win, Stanley moves
to 7-1 on the year, going the distance with three strikeouts and
only one walk, giving up three hits and two runs, one earned in the
game. Santa Clara's Jerrica Castagno took the loss for SCU, going
4.1 innings while fanning seven Camels, walking three.
The Camels return to action
tomorrow at the tourney, with games slated against Youngstown State
and Drexel. CU will face YSU at 10 p.m. PST, followed by the
Dragons at noon.
