NASHVILLE, Tenn. Despite a career-high 17 points from
junior Jessica Mack, Campbell was
defeated 69-60 in overtime by Lipscomb on Saturday evening at Allen
Arena. The Camels were outscored 11-2 in the extra
session.
Mack besides 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting
from the field and 3-for-4 work from the charity stripe, also
pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds and handed out three assists.
Sophomore Lindsay Smithberger hit her
second consecutive strong performance off the bench with nine
points. Gara Bell also tallied eight
points in a reserve role for the Camels.
The Camels (12-17, 7-9 A-Sun) came out on
a dry spell to start the overtime session and were outscored 7-0 in
the first three minutes of the extra session. After a made Gara Bell layup, the Bisons were able to hit
their final four attempts from the foul line to defeat Campbell
69-60.
CU, who trailed for most of the second
half, took the lead with 4:18 to go on a layup from Mack. Mack's
layup capped off a personal run of six consecutive Campbell points.
Redshirt junior Gara Bell followed with a
layup to take the lead out to three at 54-51.
The Bisons (9-21, 7-9 A-Sun) would answer
with a Jilian Partin jumper and a pair of
Kaleigh Gossman free throws to cut the
deficit to one. After another defensive stop, Partin was fouled and
sank both her free throws to give the Bisons a 57-56 lead with only
a 1:33 left in the game.
Following a few more defensive stops,
Jenna Bartsokas hit one of her two foul
shots to give LU a two-point advantage at 58-56 with :25 seconds
remaining.
CU's Lindsay
Smithberger followed with a dramatic made jumper to tie
the score at 58 with just under :10 seconds left in the game
(09.7). The shot was originally ruled a three but after a review by
the officials it was changed to a two.
Campbell went into the break with a 27-26 lead as
Smithberger banked in three from half court as time expired. Mack
led the team with eight points and four rebounds in the first
stanza.
For the game, the Bisons had four players
reached double figures led by 16 points and 13 rebounds from
Jilian Partin. Also for LU, Gossman had
14 points, Bartsokas totaled 13 and Katie
Rollins put in 10.
On the evening CU shot 31 percent
(25-for-80), including 19 percent from beyond the arc (4-of-22).
The Camels did hit six of their 10 attempts from the line but the
Bisons went to the line 31 times and hit 23 (74 percent). LU shot
43 percent for the game and hit 75 percent (3-for-4) of their shots
in the extra session.
CU now
returns home before coming back for the Atlantic Sun Conference
Tournament (March 5-8) in Nashville. The Camels, who earned the
sixth seed, will take on the third-seeded Gardner-Webb at noon on
Thursday.
