BUIES CREEK, N.C.- UNC Wilmington's Larry Salefsky escaped a ninth
inning bases loaded jam and the Seahawks used a five run fourth to
hand Campbell a 6-4 loss at Taylor Field on Tuesday night. UNC Wilmington (10-4, 3-0 CAA)
has taken nine straight contests from Campbell (6-6, 4-2 A-Sun),
and also extended its current winning streak to nine games.
Allen Flood (1-0) threw 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen
for the Seahawks and picked up his first win of 2008, while senior
right-hander Salefsky was credited with his fourth save of the
season after he threw an inning of hitless baseball. Campbell's Ryan Hamme (0-1) took the
loss in his first start of the season allowing four runs over 3.1
innings of work.
Five different Camels had multiple hit games including freshman
Ellis Lowe, who recorded his fifth of the season. Hamme, a junior from Wilmington, N.C.,
stroked a season high three hits and tallied his fourth straight
multi-hit game highlighted by an RBI single in the first
inning. Brandon Scott, Zach
Johnson and John Watlington had a pair of hits each.
Campbell took advantage of two throwing errors in the bottom of the
first inning plating two runners and jumping out to an early 2-0
lead. Johnson started the
inning off reaching base after being hit by UNCW's starter Brett
Braxton and scored on a Hamme single. An error by Daniel Hargrave allowed
Hamme to advance to second putting him in scoring position for the
first of Scott's two RBI on the day. Scott also lifted a ball to
right-field in the third inning which plated Lowe on a sacrifice
fly giving Campbell a 3-0 advantage after three innings.
UNCW
broke through in the top of the fourth against Hamme, who held the
Seahawks hitless over the first three innings. The Seahawks
collected five runs on five hits off both Hamme and reliever Hunter
Ford to take a 5-3 lead. Snyder doubled inside the third base bag
off of Ford to give UNCW a 4-3 lead. Senior Justin Barefoot knocked in the
fifth and final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly leaving the
score in favor of UNCW 5-3.
After
Campbell's Stephen Parsons and Watlington drew back-to-back walks
in the home half of the fourth, an RBI single by Johnson capped the
Camels' scoring off prematurely. UNCW relievers kept Campbell scoreless
in its next five chances.
Campbell's last valid
attempt fell just short in the bottom of the ninth inning after
UNCW left-hander Cameron Roth walked Lowe and hit Hamme with a
pitch. Former Campbell
pitcher Salefsky came in relief of Roth and quickly forced Scott to
fly out in foul territory, followed by a pair of strikeouts to end
the game. The 6-foot-7
right-hander grabbed his fourth save of the season in his sixth
appearance.
Despite
out-hitting UNCW 11-10, Campbell snapped its three game winning
streak which was the longest of the season. UNCW distanced itself in the all-time
series and now leads 50-33.
Campbell
concludes
its five-game homestand hosting Elon tomorrow night (Mar. 12) in a
7 p.m. tilt at Taylor Field.
