Q&A with Women's Golfer Maite Ortiz de Pinedo

Campbell athletics media services student assistant Ryan Dunn recently sat down with Maite Ortiz de Pinedo, a senior on the women's golf team from Valladolid, Spain and discussed the spring season. Last year Maite became just the 16th individual in the history of Atlantic Sun Conference to earn all-conference honors in women's golf three times in a career. She won the 2007 Fighting Camel Spring Classic and shared medalist honors at the event this year with teammate Belen Diaz Cisneros.

When did you start playing golf? Did you play any other sports?

I started playing golf when I was 4 years old. I was also involved in gymnastics.

Why did you choose Campbell?

Because of the golf program

What is your favorite golf course?

Valderrama Golf Club in Cadiz, Spain which is the home to the European PGA Tour's Volvo Masters tournament.

Do you have any superstitions?

I think I have a lot of them. I don't play with yellow tees and I try to play with balls which number is one or three.

What's one piece of advice you would give to average golfers to help them improve their game?

Practice your short game (putting and chipping) much more than your long game.

What goals do you have for the rest of the year?

Go to the national championship tournament and do everything we can each day to be the best.

What have you been working on the most to help improve your game?

My putting and trying to control my emotions better, I'm still working hard in trying to control them better.

What are the strengths of this year's team?

I think each person on this team has a lot of talent. But I think the major strength is the fact that everyone of us has a desire of being better each day and a desire to win.
