DeLAND, Fla.- Justin Lilly threw 8 1/3 strong innings and John
Watlington doubled his career high in RBI to lift Campbell to a 9-3
victory over Stetson, Thursday night at Melching Field. The last time Campbell dropped Stetson
was in 2005.
Lilly (2-1), a senior from Raleigh, N.C., scattered five hits and
three runs over 8 1/3 innings pitched to pick up his second victory
of the season. The 6-foot-4
right-hander fanned three batters in his fifth start of the
season. Stetson's Robby
Donovan (2-3) suffered the loss after allowing five runs over 5 1/3
innings of work.
Watlington paced the Camels offensive grabbing four RBI on the day,
which doubled his previous career high mark of two. The junior from Yanceyville, N.C. went
2-for-4 and scored a run as well. Joining Watlington with multi-hit
games was Carlton Floyd and Stephen Parsons.
Stetson (9-11, 2-5 A-Sun) jumped out to an early one run lead in
the second inning thanks to an RBI single by Justin Bass. Campbell proved to be relentless
answering the Hatters run with one in the fourth. Ryan Hamme led the inning off with a
liner up the middle and advanced to second on a stolen base. A sacrifice bunt by Brandon
Scott set Hamme up to score on a wild pitch by Donovan knotting the
score at one.
The Camels chased a one run fourth with a go-ahead run in the
fifth. Parsons started the
inning off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on
one of three Campbell sacrifice bunts. Back-to-back singles by Graham Fronk
and Floyd plated Parsons, giving the Camels a 2-1 advantage.
The scoring trend continued as Campbell took advantage of two
fielding errors by Stetson shortstop Casey Frawley and posted three
runs in the sixth inning.
Watlington drove in Zach Johnson, who reached on an error, on a
single down the left field line and Ellis Lowe belted a two out RBI
double to right field.
Parsons also singled and scored in an inning where all three runs
were unearned.
Lilly eluded danger in the sixth inning after Frank Florio drew a
two out walk and Jeremy Cruz squeezed a double by Hamme at first
base. Lilly's 1-0 offering
induced a fly ball to center field of the bat of Aaron Crittenden
to preserve Campbell's 5-1 lead.
Campbell (7-11, 5-5 A-Sun) administered its final blow tacking on a
pair of runs in both the seventh and ninth inning. Headlining the attack was a two out,
two RBI single to right center field by Watlington, which left
Campbell with a 9-2 lead.
Stetson clawed its way back in the ninth but fell short after
scoring two runs.
Crittenden blasted a solo home run in the inning and three
consecutive singles followed, but solid relief pitching by Hunter
Ford ended the Hatters threat and finalized the score at 9-3.
Campbell out-hit Stetson 11-7, in a game where the Hatters
committed three errors. Of
Campbell's nine runs only five were earned.
Campbell continues its A-Sun series against Stetson with a
doubleheader tomorrow (Mar. 21) at Melching Field at Conrad
Park. The games are
scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
