DELAND, FLA.-Junior first baseman Karlie Love blasted two home runs
in game one to power Campbell past Stetson, 6-4, but the Hatters
took the second contest 5-1 in Atlantic Sun softball action
Saturday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.
CU
moves to 23-13 overall and 1-3 in league play with the win, while
the Hatters go to 27-13 and 1-1 in the A-Sun. The victory marks the
first over the Hatters since March 28, 2005, when the Camels took a
3-1 decision in DeLand, ending a five-game skid to the Hatters.
Campbell also improves to 4-0 in extra inning games this year.
In
game one, Campbell jumped on the board first when freshman Katie
Hinton, getting the start in centerfield, knocked in senior
leftfielder Courtney Quinn in the third.
With the Camels leading 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Stetson's
Amanda Lindsay tied the game with an RBI single.
The knot was short-lived, however, as in the next Campbell at-bat,
first baseman Karlie Love, a junior from Mt. Airy, N.C., slugged a
three-run homer to centerfield, scoring fellow junior Hilary
Wheatley and freshman Katie Hinton, who went 4-for-4 at the dish in
the contest.
In
the Stetson seventh, junior Andrea Migliori matched Love's move
though, knocking a three-run home run of her own to send the game
into extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth, Love came up with more late-game heroics,
sending another ball over the fence, the eventual game-winner, this
time a two-run shot to right to give the Camels a 6-4 lead.
Sophomore hurler Brittany Stanley tossed nine complete innings to
get the win, going to 12-4 on the season. The West Lafayette, Ind.
native gave up four runs on five hits in the game, striking out
seven and walking three. Amanda Lindsay, a sophomore from Byhalia,
Miss., falls to 13-9, going the distance with six runs, while
scattering 11 hits, striking out eight and walking three.
In
game two, it was Stetson who grabbed the early lead, scoring a run
in the bottom of the second off a CU error. The Hatters then added
another run in the third, when junior Leonor Carreno singled in a
run.
In
the top of the fourth, freshman shortstop Amanda Miller pushed
across a Camel run by way of a sacrifice fly, scoring Love to cut
the Hatter lead to one. In the bottom of the inning, however,
Stetson's Amanda Lindsay, filling the designated player role in
game two, collected a RBI, knocking in sophomore Amy Joyce to give
the Hatters a 3-1 lead.
Campbell threatened in the top of the sixth, as Katie Hinton led
off with a double, followed by a pair of walks issued to Love and
Miller, loading the bases, but the Camels could not capitalize.
Then in the Stetson sixth, the Hatters tallied two more scores,
taking advantage of on two walks, one CU error and one hit to
increase their lead to 5-1, which they would hold.
Freshman Lauren Stephan, falling to 10-9 on the year, gave up five
runs, two earned, on six hits with seven walks and three strikeouts
in the outing for Campbell, while Hatter junior Erica Demers,
moving to 14-4, took the win, giving up just one run on two hits
with five strikeouts and three free passes.
The Camels return home next Wednesday, taking on the Phoenix of
Elon in a twinbill at the Eakes Athletic Complex. Action is slated
to begin at 4 p.m.
