DURHAM, N.C.- Brandon Scott knocked in three runs and Campbell
matched a season high in hits (13) en route to a 8-2 triumph over
North Carolina Central, Tuesday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic
Park. Campbell improves to
9-13 overall, while North Carolina Central drops to 6-16.
Cody Raisch (1-1), Campbell's starting pitcher, earned his first
victory in a Camel uniform after striking out five batters and
allowing just two runs over 5 2/3 innings pitched. The junior from Centerville, Iowa
walked only one batter. The
Eagles' Jeff Citero (0-4) suffered the loss allowing five runs over
six innings pitched.
Scott led the Camels offense as he went 3-for-5 with three RBI and
a run scored. Complimenting
Scott was Ryan Hamme and Zach Johnson who collected two hits and
two RBI each.
North Carolina Central got to Raisch early posting two runs in the
bottom of the first. After
Gray led the inning off with a single and advanced to third on Kurt
Wilson's liner to right field, Gray scored from third on an
attempted steal by Wilson.
A RBI single off the bat of Kyle Davis plated Wilson to give the
Eagles an early 2-0 lead.
Campbell answered with five runs in the third after Citero sat the
Camels down in order in their first two attempts. A Scott two RBI single up the middle
and a Johnson RBI double off the DBAP's "Blue Monster" highlighted
an inning in which Campbell stroked five hits. The two RBI single marked Scott's
team-leading 16th and 17th of the season.
North Carolina Central applied dangerous pressure in the sixth when
Oliver Jenkins reached first on a wild pitch after he struck
out. Jenkins tried to
stretch an overthrown pickoff attempt into a two-base throwing
error but Hamme threw Jenkins out from deep in foul territory to
extinguish the Eagles threat.
The Camels scored one run in the eighth after a four inning scoring
drought. Hamme slapped a
two out single through the left side to plate Causey, who was hit
by a pitch to lead off the inning, extending Campbell's lead to
6-2.
Scott stroked an RBI single and Johnson used a sacrifice fly
to finalized the score at 8-2. Carlton Floyd reached base and
scored thanks to an error by the Eagles' pitcher and Ellis Lowe
singled and scored as well.
Wes Edwards escaped a ninth inning jam in relief of Jared
Lehman. Edwards struck out
Brian Brice and induced a double play on a liner off the bat of
Kyle Davis to end an Eagle threat secure a Campbell victory.
Campbell improves to 1-0 against the NCCU Eagles and 8-0 when
leading after the seventh inning, as the game marked the two
schools first meeting.
Campbell will play its final non-conference game of the week
tomorrow (Mar. 26) against the East Carolina Pirates in Greenville,
N.C. The first pitch is set
for 6 p.m.
