BUIES
CREEK, N.C.-In a night that involved Campbell senior Courtney
Quinn's record 15th home run of the season, a triple
play, as well as a one and a two-hitter, the Camels earned a split
with USC Upstate in Atlantic Sun softball action, losing 1-0 and
winning 5-1, Friday at the Eakes Complex.
Quinn, who
had gone five contests without a round tripper, the second longest
drought for her this season, now stands alone in sole possession of
the single season home run record at
Campbell University. The senior came into the game tied with former
great Shannon O'Bryan, a mark she reached in 2001.
The
Camels, dropping just their first home game this season, go to
26-14 overall and 2-4 in league action, while the Spartans fall to
18-9 with the split and 4-4 in the A-Sun.
Freshman
Spartan hurler Morgan Childers owned the game one decision,
battling with Campbell's sophomore right-hander Brittany Stanley,
tossing a one-hitter against the Camels, who average over eight
hits a game. Stanley, who held a two-hitter until the seventh,
ended the game with only five. Childers and Stanley, in fact,
combined to allow just four base runners through six innings of
play.
The
Spartans finally capitalized in the top of the seventh, scoring on
a Lauren Quevedo RBI. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the inning,
however, the Camels threatened, as freshman Amanda Miller reached
first after being hit by a pitch. With two out and Miller on first,
sophomore third baseman Shayla Cullum nearly ended the game in
favor of the Camels, but her towering fly ball settled just short
of the 220-foot fence in left field, sealing the win for the
Spartans.
Childers
grabbed the win in the complete game, one hit shutout. The Kings
Mountain, N.C. native fanned 13 Camels in the process, walking two
to move to 15-4 on the year. Stanley was charged with the loss,
striking out four without a walk in the game, while scattering five
hits and giving up just one run to fall to 13-5.
After
being one-hit in the opening contest, the Camel bats came alive,
scoring a run in their first at-bat off a Keeli Michael single.
Campbell then put up two more in the second, as Quinn's historic
blast game the Camels a 3-0 lead.
Stanley,
who played the designated player role in game two, knocked a homer
of her own in the fourth, a solo shot, before sophomore catcher
Amanda Littlejohn registered a RBI to send the Camels up 5-0.
USC
Upstate did get on the board in the top of the sixth, as junior
rightfielder Heidi Gibbs, who reached on an error, scored on a
Courtney Feldon single to cut the deficit to 5-1, but that's where
the score would remain.
Freshman
Lauren Stephan, who tossed a quiet four strikeout, two walk two
hitter, collected the win for CU to move to 12-9 on the year, while
sophomore Brittany Rice took the loss, moving to 2-5 on the season.
Rice surrendered five runs on 12 hits, striking out two
batters.
The Camels
will be back at the Eakes Complex tomorrow, taking on another A-Sun
rival in Mercer. Game one of the doubleheader is slated to start at
2 p.m.
