BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Coming back from a five-stroke deficit at the
Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic at Keith Hills Country Club No. 1,
Campbell men's golf edged Elon for the team tournament title by one
stroke, 583-584.
The win is Campbell's fourth in a row at the tournament, and the
team's eighth in the classic's 23-year history.
Three Fighting Camels finished day two on par in the wind and rain,
with Matt Moot and Zak Drescher, both freshman, as well as junior
Mark Coppell ending the day with a 72. Moot tallied a two-under 142
in the tournament, finishing in a three-way tie for second, along
with Seton Hall's Kyle Morris and Elon's Jimmy Lytle.
USC Upstate sophomore Josh Gallman won the individual title, paring
the course after shooting a 69 in round one, to score a 141, the
second lowest score in the event's history. Chance Pipitone rounded
out the top-five individuals, shooting a one-under 143 in the
tournament.
Gardner-Webb posted the lowest team score in day-two competition,
tying the course's second-lowest all-time total with a 285. The
Bulldogs finished the tourney with a 589. Radford (592) ended its
day in the fourth position, while Florida Gulf Coast (596) ended up
in fifth place.
Drescher finished with a 144, tying for sixth overall, while
Coppell placed in a tie for 11th place, shooting a 146
over the two-day event. Senior Fredric Sundberg improved his score
by five shots on day two, scoring a 73 to finish with a 151, good
for a 32nd place tie. Sophomore Gregg Hostetter rounded
out the CU team, turning in a 153 final score in a tie for
40th place.
Competing as individuals, Campbell sophomore Victor Hielte shot a
147 to tie for 15th, while junior Isak Pettersen and
sophomore Daniel Ng Choo Sian took 46th and
55th, respectively, scoring a 154 and a 155.
Campbell will be back in action next week, heading to Rancho Santa
Fe, Calif. on March 10-11 for the Calloway Golf Collegiate
Invitational.
