STANFORD, CALIF.-For the second time in three days, Campbell
softball suffered a one run loss to a ranked opponent, falling to
No. 7 Stanford, 2-1, Thursday night at Smith Family Stadium,
kicking off the Stanford Classic.
The Cardinal, moving to 22-2 on the year, used two hits and one
Campbell error to push a pair of runs across in the bottom of the
seventh to edge the Camels. CU falls to 14-7 with the loss.
Without a score in the bottom of the second, Stanford threatened to
break the knot, loading the bases with one out on a pair of hits,
followed by a Lauren Stephan walk. The freshman pitcher then
induced two consecutive groundouts, escaping the inning
unharmed.
The Camels finally got on the board in the top of the third, as
Quinn belted a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall with two out,
Campbell's first hit of the game. The homer was Quinn's seventh of
the year, and her fourth extra-base hit in five games.
Although nine Cardinal players reached safely over the next four
innings, Stanford could not answer until the bottom of the seventh,
when junior shortstop Maddy Coon doubled in a run to tie the game
at one-all. Coon then scored on a Michelle Smith single down the
third base line, plating the winning run.
Stephan took the loss for CU, going the complete 6.1 innings, while
scattering nine hits with one strikeout and five walks to fall to
6-5 on the year. Junior Stanford pitcher Missy Penna earned the win
for the Cardinal, going all seven innings while fanning 15 Camels
and giving up three hits, one being Quinn's top of the third blast.
Penna moves to 14-2 with the win.
The Camels faced two ranked opponents in four games last season,
taking 2-0 and 2-1 losses to No. 18 Georgia, while falling to No.
23 Virginia Tech, 11-1 and 7-1. Last Tuesday at No. 21 Fresno
State, the Camels opened up with a 7-0 loss to the Bulldogs before
losing game two of the twinbill, 5-4.
The Camels resume play in the Stanford Classic tomorrow at 10 a.m.
PST, taking on the College of Charleston, followed by a contest
with Texas Tech at noon.
