STANFORD, CALIF.-Campbell softball put up five runs in the top of
the eighth inning, taking a 7-3 decision over North Dakota State
Saturday morning before dropping a 5-0 contest to No. 7 Stanford to
finish play in the Stanford Classic at Smith Family Stadium.
The Camels move to 17-8 with the split, while the Bison drop to
19-7 with the loss and the Cardinal move to 25-2.
Game one of the day featured NDSU and the Camels, who carried a
scoreless game into the fifth. After the Bison put up a run in the
bottom of the inning, Campbell answered, as junior first baseman
Karlie Love singled in freshman short stop Katie Hinton, and later
scored.
With a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh, NDSU rallied to
knot the game on a Jackie Currie RBI.
In
the top of the eighth, however, the Campbell offense took the
stage, posting five runs on four hits, including an Amanda
Littlejohn two-run homer. Senior leftfielder Courtney Quinn also
picked up a RBI, while freshman third baseman Amanda Miller drove
in a pair of runs to give the Camels a 7-2 lead.
The Bison put one up in the bottom of the inning, but could not
overcome the deficit, falling to CU 7-3.
Lauren Stephan earned the win, going the full eight innings while
striking out and walking three. The freshman gave up six hits in
the game, allowing three runs, with only one earned.
For the Bison, senior hurler Bekki Rasmussen took the loss, going
the distance while scattering nine hits and giving up seven runs,
four earned, striking out four and walking one.
Taking on Stanford for the second time in three days, the Camels
looked to avenge a 2-1 loss from Thursday, but came up short.
After a scoreless game through three complete innings, junior
shortstop Maddy Coon tagged a two-run blast to right field, giving
the Cardinal a 2-0 lead. Stanford would add three more in the
sixth, capitalizing on a pair of CU errors and two hits, taking the
game 5-0.
Sophomore Brittany Stanley took the loss for the Camels, dropping
just her fourth game of the year to go to 9-4 overall. The West
Lafayette, Ind. native gave up five runs in the contest, four
earned, while giving up only four hits, walking six and striking
out two in six innings of work. Ashley Chinn, a Stanford freshman,
allowed three Campbell hits, walking three and striking out two in
a complete game shutout.
The Camels end their California trip with a 6-5 record, four losses
coming against nationally ranked opponents (No. 7 Stanford and No.
21 Fresno State). The Camels offense put up nearly five runs per
game on the trip, scoring 54 times with 12 home runs, 14 doubles
and two triples, batting .270 as a team.
Amanda Littlejohn pulled a combined .432 average while playing in
her home state, slugging three homers with 11 RBI, two doubles and
nine runs scored. Rookie Amanda Miller takes a .344 average away
from the trip, knocking in 10 runs with one double and four runs
scored, while Quinn batted .333 with four home runs, nine RBI, 10
runs scored, three doubles and one triple.
The Camels will return to the East Coast now, participating in the
Charleston Southern Invitational next weekend. CU is slated for
four contests in that tourney, including games with Notre Dame,
Towson and the host Buccaneers.
