BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Campbell's late inning rally fell short in game
one, but senior Justin Lilly threw a 143 pitch complete game five
hitter in game two as the Camels earned an A-Sun doubleheader split
against Jacksonville, Friday night at Taylor Field.
Jacksonville took game one by a score of 8-5, but Campbell bounced
back with a 3-1 triumph in game two.
Lilly (4-3), a 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher from Raleigh, N.C.,
was masterful in game two as he earned his third victory of the
season punching out ten JU batters and surrendering just one
walk. Blake Herring was the
last Camel to throw a complete game as he did it on April 28, 2007
against Gardner-Webb.
Matt Loosen (4-1) took the loss in game two for JU after allowing
three earned runs, which all came in a single inning, and striking
out five in 5 1/3 innings of work.
CU
sophomore Hunter Ford (1-2) ran into trouble early as he suffered
the loss in game one. The
left hander from Wilmington, N.C. was strapped with five earned
runs in 1 2/3 innings of work.
Matt Dobbins (4-2), a senior from Longwood, Fla., picked up his
fourth victory of the season for JU allowing three runs in 5 2/3
solid innings pitched.
Dobbins also struck out three Camel hitters.
Brandon Scott, Mike Causey and John Watlington all had multi-hit
performances in game one, while freshman Ellis Lowe saw his
season-high 16 game hitting streak get snapped. Five different
players had a single hit in game two, headed by Carlton Floyd who
connected with a two RBI double to left field.
Ryan Hamme, a junior from Wilmington, N.C., found the scoreboard in
right field with his third homer of the season in a ninth inning
rally that came up just short in the first game.
Kevin Ferreira and Matt Lopez both collected three hit games in the
first contest, while Jeremy Gillan was the only player for either
team to have a multi-hit performance in the second game.
The Camels (13-22, 7-13 A-Sun) scored all they would need in the
third inning of game two.
After Watlington was hit by a pitch and Johnson reached base on a
walk, Hamme squeezed a single up the middle to score Watlington and
give Campbell its first run of the inning. A double steal by Johnson and Hamme
put two runners in scoring position for Floyd's first pitch double
over the left fielders head, pushing the Camels to an early 3-0
lead.
After Lilly struck out five through the first three innings, JU
finally got on the board and scored its only run of the game on a
sacrifice fly off the bat of catcher Brad Simmons. The deep fly ball to right field
scored Gillan, who singled to reach base and was advanced on a
Myers hit. Five consecutive
shutout innings by Lilly ended the game two scoring at 3-1
JU
(20-14, 11-9 A-Sun) jumped on Ford early in game one posting four
runs in the first frame.
Undoubtedly the momentum builder for JU occurred after Ferreira,
Gillan and Dan Maier single to kick off the first inning. With runners on first and second
after Maier singled in Ferriera, Thomas Myers deposited Ford's 0-1
offering over the left-center wall for his team-leading seventh
homer of the season.
After Campbell (13-22, 7-13 A-Sun) countered with a run in the
second thanks to a Causey RBI single through the left side, JU
tacked on single runs in both the second and third making the score
6-1 after three innings.
A
Hamme sacrifice fly in the fifth and a Watlington RBI single to
right field in the sixth cut JU's lead to 6-3, but the Dolphins
mustered up two runs in the eighth. Extra-base hits punished CU in the
eighth as Lopez launched a solo shot to left and Ferreira placed an
RBI triple down the right field line extending the Dolphins' margin
to five runs.
Campbell made a valiant effort at a comeback in the ninth but two
runs weren't enough finalizing the game one score at 8-5. Hamme hit his third
round-tripper off the scoreboard in right and Scott connected with
an RBI double to left field.
Campbell will play a crucial series-deciding game three with
Jacksonville tomorrow (April 12) at Taylor Field. The first pitch is slated for 1
p.m.
