BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Justin Lilly threw a 143 pitch complete game
five-hitter to capture the accolade of Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the
Week Campbell's first of the season the league office announced today. Lilly became the first Campbell
pitcher to gain the honor since Blake Herring garnered the award on
Feb. 30, 2007.
"I
am extremely happy for Justin and all the hard work that he has put
into it," said Campbell head coach Greg Goff. "He came back from a rough outing the
past week and worked incredibly hard to produce like he did. What an honor it is not only for
Justin, but for the Campbell baseball program. I'm thankful that he is here and there
isn't anybody more deserving than him."
Lilly, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., was nothing short of masterful
last Friday (April 11) as he led Campbell to a 3-1 A-Sun victory
over the visiting Jacksonville Dolphins. Lilly, who collected seven strikeouts
through just five innings, nabbed Campbell's first complete game of
the season and first since Herring did it on April 28, 2007 against
Gardner-Webb. Lilly
finished the game with a career high ten strikeouts. Interestingly, the last person to fan
ten batters in a game was Herring on March 3, 2007 against Holy
Cross.
Campbell has been extremely successful when Lilly is penciled in as
the starter as the Camels are 5-3 when he gets the nod. Lilly, who
is 3-2 to this point in the season, currently leads Campbell in
several categories including winning percentage (.600), innings
pitched (51.2) and strikeouts (38).
Campbell concludes its five game homestand with a pair of mid-week
non-conference games on Tuesday (April 15) and Wednesday (April
16). Campbell hosts North
Carolina A&T on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and invites the Duke Blue
Devils to Taylor Field on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
