BUIES CREEK, N.C. Campbell
University men's golf signee Mitch Gray has enjoyed continuing
success during his final varsity season at West Florence (S.C.)
High School. Gray, who
inked a national letter of intent with the Camel program last fall,
led his team to titles in March at the Palmetto High School Spring
Championship in Myrtle Beach and the Capitol Classic Invitational
at Columbia.
Gray, who hails from
Florence, S.C., is one of the top ranked junior golfers in the
nation. He is ranked number
40 nationally in the class of 2008 by Golfweek and number-53 by
Junior Golf. In addition,
Gray is currently ranked third in his home state of South
Carolina.
As a junior in 2007, Gray was
named to the 1st Team HP Scholastic Junior All-America team after
earning all-state honors. A
three-time all-region performer at West Florence, Gray also
produced a 72.25 stroke average over 12 rounds in 2007 AJGA
events.
In addition, Gray represented
his country last month in the Can-Am Junior Team Matches at
Wachesaw Plantation Club in Murrells Inlet, S.C. The American team
tallied a total of 152.5 points to Canada's 99.5 to win the 10th
annual edition of the Matches. Gray and Richard Jung of Ontario
swapped pars until the long par-4 16th hole when Gray took the
lead. He proceeded to claim the 18th and win his match two up,
earning 12.5 points to win by a margin of four.
A National Honor Society
student and Beta Club member, Gray plans to major in business
administration at Campbell.
Gray
is joining a Fighting Camel program that under head coach John
Crooks has won four conference championships and 35 tournament
titles in the last 18 years. Golf Digest ranked the Fighting Camel
program 13th-best in the nation in its "Golf First" category and
ninth in its "Golf Only" rating, which figures in player scoring
average, improvement, facilities and coaching.
