Men's Golf Signee Mitch Gray Continues Outstanding High School Senior Season

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell University men's golf signee Mitch Gray has enjoyed continuing success during his final varsity season at West Florence (S.C.) High School. Gray, who inked a national letter of intent with the Camel program last fall, led his team to titles in March at the Palmetto High School Spring Championship in Myrtle Beach and the Capitol Classic Invitational at Columbia.

Gray, who hails from Florence, S.C., is one of the top ranked junior golfers in the nation. He is ranked number 40 nationally in the class of 2008 by Golfweek and number-53 by Junior Golf. In addition, Gray is currently ranked third in his home state of South Carolina.

As a junior in 2007, Gray was named to the 1st Team HP Scholastic Junior All-America team after earning all-state honors. A three-time all-region performer at West Florence, Gray also produced a 72.25 stroke average over 12 rounds in 2007 AJGA events.

In addition, Gray represented his country last month in the Can-Am Junior Team Matches at Wachesaw Plantation Club in Murrells Inlet, S.C. The American team tallied a total of 152.5 points to Canada's 99.5 to win the 10th annual edition of the Matches. Gray and Richard Jung of Ontario swapped pars until the long par-4 16th hole when Gray took the lead. He proceeded to claim the 18th and win his match two up, earning 12.5 points to win by a margin of four.

A National Honor Society student and Beta Club member, Gray plans to major in business administration at Campbell.

Gray is joining a Fighting Camel program that under head coach John Crooks has won four conference championships and 35 tournament titles in the last 18 years. Golf Digest ranked the Fighting Camel program 13th-best in the nation in its "Golf First" category and ninth in its "Golf Only" rating, which figures in player scoring average, improvement, facilities and coaching.
