BUIES CREEK, N.C.
Davy Sum earned three of Campbell's six Atlantic Sun men's tennis
All-Conference honors, including the prestigious Freshman of the
Year award, the league office announced Thursday. In addition to
this honor, Sum, a native of Strasbourg, France, reeled in
First-Team and All-Freshman awards as well.
Larbi Lamzouri joins Sum on
the All-Freshman team, while also claiming a spot on the
All-Conference Second-Team. For the third straight year, senior
Marc Sifre earned a spot on the Second-Team as well.
Sum was a unanimous pick
among A-Sun head coaches and sports information directors for
Freshman of the Year. He is the first CU
tennis player to earn this honor since the school joined the
Atlantic Sun conference in 1995.
In his first year as a
Fighting Camel, Sum has accumulated a 24-10 singles mark while
playing every match of the spring season at the top singles
position. His outing at number-one singles stands at 16-6, while
his record against A-Sun opponents matches the team's conference
record of 7-3.
In February, the freshman
earned back-to-back A-Sun Player of the Week honors, while riding
an 11-match win streak that extended from February 8 to March
17.
Sum also recorded a 12-6
doubles record with partner Gabriel Delarue, also playing primarily
at number-one.
Lamzouri, a freshman from
Meknes, Morocco, joined the team prior to the spring season and
compiled a 13-7 singles record, including an 8-3 mark at the
two-spot. Lamzouri was 7-3 in conference action, and just last week
earned the final A-Sun Player of the Week award of the
season.
Just as he did his sophomore
and junior years, Sifre finds himself awarded A-Sun Second-Team
honors once again. The Barcelona, Spain native earned a 20-7
singles mark on the year, including a 13-5 mark at the
three-spot.
Sifre's career singles total
stands at 61-42, which ties him for eighth place in CU's record
books for most career wins. He shares the spot with former Camel
Jiri Beranek, who compiled a 61-37 record from 2002-05.
Sifre and Lamzouri have also
teamed together at number-two doubles to record a 7-7 mark on the
year.
Prior to Sum, the last
Campbell tennis player to earn first-team honors was Florent
Wilpotte, as a senior in the 2005-06 season.
Campbell has placed one or
more freshmen on the men's All-Freshman team for the past six
years. Last year, Viktor Taune earned the all-freshman honor for
the Camels, while Sifre and Delarue notched second-team awards.
Head Coach David Johnson also earned the distinction of men's
tennis Coach of the Year.
The Fighting Camels (15-7,
7-3 A-Sun) have earned a three-seed heading into this weekend's
A-Sun championship tournament. The squad will first face
sixth-seeded Mercer (4-17, 2-8 A-Sun) tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. The
tournament is being held on East Tennessee State's campus in
Johnson City, Tenn.
