Aggressive Play Characterizes Campbell Baseball's Revitalized Program

BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Although the Camels 10-17 record doesn't completely satisfy first year head coach Greg Goff, incredible strides have been accomplished in the revitalization process of Campbell's baseball program. Campbell has doubled the amount of wins the 2007 squad had through its first 27 games, and has matched last years' A-Sun win total (5) with 18 league games left to play.

"This team has shown glimpses of great play at times this season," said Campbell head coach Greg Goff. "Our players are finally getting used to our style of play and the mentality we are trying to implement. The process will take some time, but the guys are playing extremely hard and I believe there is a silver lining to it all. If some of our guys catch fire and play quality baseball over the next six weeks, I think we can make our way into the tournament and compete for a championship once we get there."

Campbell, who has struggled offensively over certain periods this season, plays a different brand of baseball than teams in the past. On any given night you might not see a lineup filled with powerful hitters, but one thing you will see is a gritty bunch of guys who will do anything to get on base.

"Hitters jobs are to generate offense and we have been struggling as of late," said Goff. "We have to take advantage of the other things like getting hit by pitches, stealing bases and moving guys over when necessary. I believe you can beat good teams by utilizing the small ball mentality."

The Camels have done just that as they rank among the nations best in several of the "small ball" categories. Campbell has been hit by 42 pitches, which ranks 18th in the country, while its 43 stolen bases is 38th best in the nation (NCAA report through 3/30/08). Including its game against North Carolina Central on Tuesday, April 1, Campbell leads the A-Sun in being hit by pitches (47) and is second behind Jacksonville in stolen bases (46).

Leading the way for the Camels are upperclassmen Brandon Scott and Ryan Hamme. Scott, a senior from Robersonville, N.C., has continually climbed Campbell's all-time stolen base records and recently passed both Randy Hood and Jeff Blick for third on the list with 57. The right-handed utility player is one short of tying James White (58) for second, but has significant ground to cover to catch Nic Carter (72) – Campbell's current record holder.

Hamme etched his name into Campbell's record books against North Carolina Central after being hit by two pitches in the contest. The junior from Wilmington, N.C. has been hit nine times this season, which ties Tony Della Costa and Johnny Keelan for tenth best in a single season. With 29 games left to play, Hamme needs nine more to overtake Josh Maddocks (17) as the single season leader.

With the addition of Ellis Lowe and Graham Fronk – both freshmen who rank among Campbell's best in several offensive categories – Coach Goff's goal is not only develop quality players, but instill a winning tradition.

"We're in it for the long run," said Goff. "It's not how you start, it's how you finish. My teams always finish strong as we continue to make strides throughout the season. I feel like this team is on the right path."
