BUIES CREEK, N.C.- After leading Campbell to its second consecutive
league series victory last weekend against Gardner-Webb, seniors
Justin Lilly and Brandon Scott swept the Atlantic Sun Player of the
Week honors as Lilly was tabbed pitcher of the week and Scott was
named player of the week, the A-Sun office announced today.
Jacksonville is the only other team to sweep the A-Sun weekly award
this season as Dan Maier and Matt Dobbins did it on Mar. 10.
Lilly virtually
repeated his performance last weekend against Jacksonville as he
threw his second consecutive complete game and struck out ten
batters to become the first player to earn the accolade of pitcher
of the week in back-to-back weeks since North Florida's Jeremy
Papelbon was recognized twice in-a-row in 2006. Lilly, a senior business
administration major from Raleigh, N.C., was brilliant leading
Campbell to a 10-3 game two victory over Gardner-Webb. Lilly
surrendered just two walks and two runs in the contest and put an
exclamation point on his day striking out the side to end the
game.
Not only does
Lilly rank among the league leaders in innings pitched
(2nd) and strikeouts (8th), but Campbell
stands 6-2 when Lilly is penciled in as the starter. In addition, Lilly picked off two
Bulldog base runners, which marked his fifth of the season and
added to Campbell's league-leading 17.
Scott, a senior
from Robersonville, N.C., displayed his versatility last weekend
showing production not only at the plate, but on the base paths as
well. On the week Scott
batted 9-for-20 (.450), but
more impressively he went 7-for-12 with three doubles, five RBI, a
home run and four runs scored against Gardner-Webb. Not only did Scott pick up a save in
game three, but he stole five bases over the weekend (six over the
week), which puts him just three away from breaking Nic Carter's
all-time record of 72.
Scott continues to climb the single season ranks as well as he is
just eight swipes away from overtaking Carter's mark of 32. Campbell currently leads the
conference in stolen bases (77) and ranks 30th in the
country in the category (NCAA report as of 4/13/08).
After having a
slow start at the plate in 2008, Scott has caught fire and boasts a
.463 batting average over his last ten games. Down that stretch Scott has also
knocked in 14 runs, belted seven doubles, grabbed 11 stolen bases
and scored 11 runs. Scott's
arm has also proved to be a valuable tool as he has thrown 8 2/3
innings, struck out 11 batters and owns a 1-0 record with two saves
in his last three outings.
Campbell heads to
Farmville, Va. tomorrow (April 22) to face the Longwood Lancers
before hosting the East Carolina Pirates on Wednesday (April 23) at
Taylor Field. Tuesday's
game will begin at 6 p.m., while Wednesday's game is set for 7
p.m.
